RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
In the scope of the iA* Arts Research Unit (UID/06428/2025) Reference: iA_BD_CINEMATIC
A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for MSc (BI) enrolled in a PhD program, under the Collaboration Protocol for Financing the Multiannual Plan for Research Grants for Doctoral Students, signed between FCT and iA* Arts Research Unit (UID/06428/2025), to be carried out at iA* Arts Research Unit at the University of Beira Interior (https://iartes.ubi.pt), under the following conditions:

2. Objective of the activity
The Doctoral Research Grant is intended to finance research activities leading to the attainment of a doctoral degree at a Portuguese university. The research activities leading to the attainment of a doctoral degree must be framed within the iA* Arts Research Unit, specifically the iA*Lab CineMAtiC – Cinema, Media Arts and Shared Creation.
3. Requirements for admission and hiring
To hold a Master's degree in one of the following areas or related fields: Digital Art, Visual Arts, Audiovisual, Cinema, Multimedia, and to meet the conditions to be enrolled in a study cycle leading to a Doctorate degree.
If the academic degree required for this competition was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, the provisions of Decree-Law 66/2018 of August 16 and Ordinance No. 33/2019 of January 25 must be observed. Presentation of the certificate(s) of recognition of foreign academic degree(s) is mandatory for signing the fellowship contract. Enrollment in the third cycle of studies must be completed before signing the contract.
3.1 Skills
- Proficiency in Portuguese and English, including effective oral and written communication skills in academic and scientific contexts;
- Ability to conduct independent research with scientific rigour;
- Competence in literature searching, literature review, and critical analysis of the state of the art;
- Excellent academic writing and scientific communication skills;
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines;
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of interdisciplinary research teams.
- Solid knowledge of film theory, analysis, aesthetics, and/or history of cinema, as well intermediality and media arts, will be considered an asset.
4. Work plan
The candidate must attach to the application a Research Plan, aligned with the objectives of the iA* Arts Research Unit, particularly those associated with iA*Lab CineMAtiC – Cinema, Media Arts and Shared Creation.
The Research Plan must include: Full identification of the candidate; Project title; Keywords (maximum of 5); Abstract (maximum of 200 words); General and specific objectives (maximum of 300 words); State of the Art (maximum of 1,000 words); Detailed project description (maximum of 1,500 words) and a Gantt chart; Bibliographic, filmographic, and artistic references (maximum of 20 references).
When applicable, the proposed academic supervision must be clearly identified, and a justification for the composition of the supervisory team must be provided.

6. Work location
The work will be carried out at the iA* Arts Research Unit, University of Beira Interior, located at Rua Marquês d'Ávila e Bolama, 6201-001 Covilhã, Portugal.
7. Fellowship duration and conditions
The research fellowship will be awarded for an initial period of 12 months, with an expected starting date of 1, November, 2026. The fellowship shall be carried out on an exclusive dedication basis, in accordance with the Regulations for Research Fellowships of the University of Beira Interior (RBIUBI).
The fellowship may be renewed for successive periods of 12 months, subject to the availability of funding and the fulfilment of the applicable eligibility requirements, provided that its total duration does not exceed 36 months or the completion date of the project, whichever occurs first.
Renewal of the fellowship is conditional upon the continued fulfilment of the eligibility requirements in force at the time of renewal and requires the submission of a formal renewal request within 60 working days prior to the beginning of the renewal period, accompanied by the following documents:
- a) A detailed progress report on the work carried out, including the URLs of any conference presentations, publications, and scientific or artistic outputs resulting from the research activities, where applicable;
- b) A written statement by the Research Unit supervisor assessing the fellow's progress and supporting the renewal request;
- c) A Research Plan for the proposed renewal period;
- d) Documentary evidence of renewed enrolment in the doctoral programme required for the maintenance of the fellowship.
8. Benefits
A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of 1.359,64€ according to the updated values that can be consulted at https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.
9. Evaluation criteria
Applications will be assessed on the basis of the merit of the candidate and the merit of the Research Plan, in accordance with the evaluation criteria and sub-criteria set out below. Eligible applications will be scored on a scale from 0 to 100 points for each of the following evaluation criteria:
Criterion A – Merit of the Candidate (40%)
- Academic qualifications (reflecting the classifications obtained in the documented academic degrees);
- Curriculum Vitae (reflecting the candidate's scientific, artistic and professional track record);
- Motivation letter.
Criterion B – Merit of the Research Plan (40%)
- Relevance of the proposed research topic and adequacy of the research objectives;
- Scientific quality of the state of the art and of the methodology proposed for the implementation of the Research Plan;
- Feasibility and relevance of the Research Plan in light of the objectives of the iA* Research Unit in Arts, namely those of the iA* Lab CineMAtiC – Cinema, Media Arts and Collaborative Creation.
Criterion C – Interview (20%)
The interview will account for 20% of the final evaluation and will assess the following aspects: motivation; expectations and academic/professional background; scientific knowledge in the relevant field; organisational skills and commitment; scientific integrity; and ability to work as part of a team.
The interview will be conducted in person at the premises of the University of Beira Interior, at a venue to be communicated in due course. Failure to attend the interview without duly justified grounds will result in the candidate's exclusion from the selection procedure.
For the purpose of awarding the research fellowships, candidates will be ranked according to the weighted average of the scores obtained in each evaluation criterion, calculated as follows:
Final Classification = (0.4 × Criterion A) + (0.4 × Criterion B) + (0.2 × Criterion C)
In the event of a tie, candidates will be ranked according to the scores obtained in each evaluation criterion, in the following order of precedence: Criterion A, Criterion B, and Criterion C.
Only candidates obtaining a final classification of at least 60 points shall be eligible for the award of a research fellowship.

13. Publication/notification of results
The final results of the evaluation process will be published in a sorted list, by the final classification obtained, and posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Arts and Letters of the University of Beira Interior. The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.
14. Complaint and Appeal Procedures
After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
The proposal for the final ranking of the candidates will constitute a reserve list for selection for a period of 12 (twelve) months.
