Offer Description
The University of Maia (UMAIA) is opening a call for one Research Fellowship (BI) in the scientific field of Psychology, within the framework of the project “Study on the Prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation in Portugal” (CPR/6356/2024).
The fellowship is intended for a candidate holding a Master's degree in Forensic Clinical Psychology, Clinical and Health Psychology, or a related field, who is enrolled in a PhD programme in Psychology and has published at least one scientific article in an indexed scientific journal.
The selected candidate will contribute to research activities on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), including literature review; collection, systematisation, processing and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data; participation in team meetings; preparation of technical reports; writing and submission of scientific articles and a recommendations guide; and dissemination of the project's scientific results.
The research activities will be carried out at UMAIA, specifically at the CIEG-UMAIA Hub, under the scientific supervision of Doutora Sofia Neves and Doutora Joana Topa.
The fellowship will be awarded on an exclusive dedication basis for a period of 12 months, with an expected starting date in October 2026. The monthly fellowship allowance is €1,359.64.

Applicants must:

- Be enrolled in a PhD programme in the scientific field of Psychology;
- Have at least one scientific article published in an indexed scientific journal.
Applicants holding academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must have their degrees recognised in accordance with Portuguese Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August. All required recognition formalities must be completed by the time the fellowship contract is signed.

Benefits
The fellowship provides a monthly allowance of €1,359.64, paid monthly by bank transfer, in accordance with the fellowship rates established by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, I.P.).
The fellowship holder will also benefit from personal accident insurance covering research activities.
Fellowship holders who are not covered by any social protection scheme may join the voluntary social security scheme, in accordance with the applicable Portuguese legislation. FCT will cover the corresponding contributions within the terms and limits established by the Research Fellowship Holder Statute.
Eligibility criteria

Eligible applicants will be assessed based on Curricular Assessment (70%) and an Interview (30%).
The Curricular Assessment (70%) will consider:
- English language proficiency (10%);
- Previous research experience, preferably in areas relevant to the work plan, including systematic literature reviews and the collection, analysis and processing of quantitative and/or qualitative data (25%);
- Knowledge of statistics, particularly data analysis and processing (10%);
- Quartile ranking of the published scientific article (10%);
- Motivation letter, including the applicant's academic and/or professional background, reasons for applying, and suitability for the proposed work plan (10%);
- Letter of recommendation (5%).
The Interview (30%) will assess:
- Applicant's motivation (15%);
- Overall assessment of the skills considered relevant to the work plan and the suitability of the applicant's profile (15%).
Selection process
The selection process consists of a Curricular Assessment (70%) and an Interview (30%).
Both the Curricular Assessment and the Interview will be scored on a scale from 0 to 20 points, rounded to two decimal places. Each applicant's score will be determined by the average of the scores awarded by the members of the Selection Committee.
Based on the assessment, the Selection Committee will draw up a ranked list of applicants, indicating their final scores on a scale from 0 to 20 points, rounded to two decimal places.
In the event of a tie, the Chair of the Selection Committee will have the casting vote.
The Selection Committee reserves the right not to select any applicant if it considers that none of the applicants meets the required profile.
Selection Committee
The Selection Committee is composed of:
- Professor Sofia Neves, University of Maia – Chair;
- Professor Joana Topa, University of Maia – Member;
- Professor Cátia Pontedeira, University of Maia – Member.
Publication of Results and Appeal Procedures
The evaluation results will be published as a ranked list, according to the final score obtained, on the University of Maia (UMAIA) website, within a maximum of 10 working days after the application deadline. Applicants will also be notified of the proposed decision by email.
Applicants will have 10 working days to exercise their right to a prior hearing. In the absence of any comments or objections, the proposed decision will become final. Where comments or objections are submitted, the final decision will be communicated within 10 working days.
Applicants may lodge a complaint against the final decision within 15 working days or submit an appeal to the highest executive body of the funding entity within 30 working days following notification of the final decision, in accordance with Article 12 of the Research Fellowship Regulations of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
