The Instituto de Educação da Universidade de Lisboa (IE-ULisboa) is opening a call for a Research Fellowship within the scope of the Project “ChangEDU – Understanding change in Education: Conditions, developments and achievements” (Project n. 16468, Operation Code LISBOA2030-FEDER-00763900), funded by COMPETE 2030 and national funds, under the following terms:
1. Scientific Area: Education
2. Admission requirements:
- Hold a Master’s degree in Sciences of Education or in a related field.
- Be enrolled, or meet the conditions to enrol in, a PhD programme in Education in doctoral programme in Education.
- Be fluent in spoken and written Portuguese and English.
3. Preferred requirements:
- Experience in qualitative research within the Social Sciences;
- Professional experience in Education and/or Teaching;
- Knowledge of qualitative data analysis (e.g., content analysis);
- Availability to travel nationwide.
4. Work plan: The fellowship shall support the Project “ChangEDU – Understanding change in Education: Conditions, developments and achievements” and has as main activities:
- Literature research;
- Develop of data collection instruments, as well as gathering and analysis of empirical data;
- Preparation of reports and other project products;
- Supporting the organisation of, and participating in, meetings and events within the scope of the project;
- Collaborating in the management of partnerships with schools and other organisations at national level;
- Disseminating information on the project’s website and social media;
- Participating in activities to disseminate research results by taking part in conferences and publishing articles in scientific journals;
- Preparation and discussion of the PhD research project within the scope of the project.
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations: Research Fellowship Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18th, in its current wording; FCT Regulation of Research Studentships, in effect; Regulation for Research Grants of the Universidade de Lisboa, published in annex to Order no. 6238/2020, DR 2nd Series, no. 113, of 12th June 2020, amended and republished by Order no. 8061/2022, in the DR 2nd Series, no. 126, of July 1st, 2022.
6. Workplace: The work plan will be carried out at the Instituto de Educação da Universidade de Lisboa (IE-ULisboa), under the scientific supervision of Professor António Nóvoa, Emeritus Professor at IE-ULisboa and Professor Joana Viana, Assistant Professor at IE-ULisboa.
7. Duration and regime of the fellowship: The fellowship will have a duration of 12 (twelve) months, with a predicted start in October 2026. The fellowship may be renewed for additional periods, under the terms of Article 6, paragraph 4 of the FCT Regulation of Research Studentships, within the duration of the project.
The tasks as a fellowship holder are carried out under an exclusive dedication regime.
8. Value of the Monthly Maintenance Allowance: The fellowship holder receives a Monthly Maintenance Subsidy (MMS) in the amount of 1 359,64€ (one thousand three hundred and fifty-nine euros and sixty-four cents), according to the table of stipends of the fellowships awarded by FCT, IP in the country (www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/).
The grant includes training costs (tuition fees).
The fellowship holder will benefit from personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection system, may access social security through enrolment in the voluntary social insurance scheme, under the terms set out in Article 22, paragraph 1 of the FCT Regulation of Research Studentships.
9. Fellowship component payments: Payments due to fellowship holder are made by bank transfer to the account identified by the fellowship holder or by check.
10. Selection and Valuation Criteria: The selection methods to be used will be based on the following parameters:
A – Academic Career (reflecting the classification of the Master’s degree).
B – Curriculum Vitae (reflecting the scientific, professional, and, where applicable, academic track record, focusing on the field of education and experience in roles described in the work plan).
C – Letter of Motivation (in accordance with the project objectives, taking into account motivation, transversal knowledge in the field, and demonstrated availability).
The selection parameters will be assigned the following percentage weight:
Final classification = 0,2 x A + 0,5 x B + 0,3 x C
The selection parameters are valued on a scale between 0 and 20. Candidates whose application is assessed with a final score of less than 14 are not eligible for a grant.
If necessary, the three candidates with the best classification will be called to carry out a selection interview, which can be carried out by videoconference.
In this case, for candidates who proceed to the interview phase, the first evaluation component will be weighted at 60% and the interview at 40%.
The interview will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Motivation for scientific research overall and for the specific area of study (25%);
- Communication skills (25%);
- Knowledge in the area of the study to be carried out (30%);
- Capacity for analysis and critical thinking (20%).
11. Composition of the Selection Jury: The Jury was appointed by Order No. 25/2026 of the Director of the Instituto de Educação da Universidade de Lisboa (IE-ULisboa), dated 27 of July 2026, and has the following constitution:
- Dr. Joana Andreia Domingues Viana, Assistant Professor at IE-ULisboa, President of the Jury;
- Dr. Jorge Manuel Nunes Ramos do Ó, Full Professor at IE-ULisboa, Member;
- Dr. Mónica Luísa Mendes Baptista, Full Professor at IE-ULisboa, Member;
- Dr. Natalie de Nóbrega dos Santos, Assistant Professor at IE-ULisboa, Substitute Member.
12. Publication/notification of results: The final evaluation results will be published as a ranked list of final grades, on the website www.ie.ulisboa.pt, and all candidates will be notified by email.
13. Application deadline: The application is open from August 3rd to September 10th, 2026.
14. Submission of application: Applications must be formalized, necessarily, through the following documents:
- Application Form, available at www.ie.ulisboa.pt/bolseiros;
- Copy of the identification document (declaration of consent available on the website www.ie.ulisboa.pt/bolseiros);
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae;
- Proof of enrollment in the current academic year in a PhD in Education course;
- Certificate of Qualifications;
- Letter of motivation, which must include, amongst other elements that the candidate may consider to be relevant: (i) the intentions that drive the application; (ii) the activities and the skills to be highlighted as particularly relevant for the candidate’s integration into the project team.
- Other documents that the candidate may consider relevant.

Remark 1: Documents proving the completion of academic degrees or diplomas, or registration in a study cycle leading to the academic degree, may be dispensed with during the application stage, being replaced by a declaration of honour by the candidates. However, the verification of those documents will be mandatory if the fellowship is obtained.
Remark 2: The academic degrees obtained in foreign countries require recognition by a Portuguese Institution according to Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, and Decree no. 33/2019, of January 25th. The presentation of such degree recognition is mandatory to sign the contract. More information can be found here: www.dges.gov.pt/pt/pagina/reconhecimento. Under regular terms, if the recognition documents are not presented three months after the disclosure of the fellowship approval, the fellowship will not be granted.
15.
