S2AQUA - Laboratório Colaborativo, Associação para uma Aquacultura Sustentável e Inteligente (S2AQUAcoLAB), in the terms of article 7 of S2AQUAcoLAB’s Research Fellowship Regulation, hereby announces that a call for applications has been authorized for the award of a Research Fellowship (Postdoctoral) in the field of data modeling or related fields.
The call for applications for a Research Grant is intended to support research activities within the Amy-WARN project, which aims to develop a predictive tool for forecasting outbreaks caused by A. ocellatum in an operational context. To this end, the project integrates knowledge about the parasite’s life cycle with data from environmental monitoring, enabling the identification of risk conditions and the anticipation of outbreaks. Funded by Algarve 2030, Lisboa 2030, and Orçamento de Estado.
1. Beneficiaries (conditions required)
The fellowship is intended for holders of a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, or another degree that required modeling, obtained within the three years prior to the application submission date.
2. Desired profile
2.1 Education and experience:
- Degree (REQUIRED) of Doctor in Bioinformatics, Biomedical Sciences, Biology, or another degree that required modeling, obtained within the three years prior to the application submission date;
2.2 Technical skills:
- Experience in modeling using machine learning techniques;
- Experience in modeling using process-based dynamic models;
- Ability to program in a high-level language (e.g., Python or Matlab);
Other requirements:
- Fluency in Portuguese and proficiency in English (spoken and written);
- Ability to adapt, integrate, and work as part of a team;
- Results-oriented and skilled at problem-solving;
- Strong personal organizational skills, a sense of responsibility, and attention to detail;
- Independence, proactivity, and the ability to manage time efficiently;
- Willingness to work shifts and occasionally on weekends;
- Willingness to travel domestically and/or internationally, as needed.
3. The work plan
The work program includes, in particular, the following activities:
- Plan the development of models for system forecasting;
- Model programming;
- Model parameterization using data collected within the scope of the project;
- Participate in data analysis, preparation of reports and scientific articles, and project meetings.
4. Submission of applications
The call is open between September 16 and 11:59 p.m. on September 30, 2026.
To apply for this research fellowship you must send an email to geral@s2aquacolab.pt indicating the reference number for the research fellowship competition S2AQUAcoLAB/Bolsa/Ref_13/2026. Each candidate may submit only one application, failing which all applications submitted will be cancelled. An application will only be considered valid upon submission of all mandatory documents. The provision of false statements or the commission of acts of plagiarism shall constitute grounds for cancellation of the application, without prejudice to the adoption of other sanctioning measures.
5. Type and duration of the fellowship
A postdoctoral research fellowship will be awarded.
The fellowship is scheduled to begin in December, on a date to be determined later in consultation with the candidate, and will last for 12 months on a full-time basis.
The fellowship must be carried out on an exclusive basis, in accordance with the S2AQUAcoLAB Fellowship Regulations (Regulamento Bolsas de Investigação S2AQUAcoLAB) and the FCT Fellowship Regulations based on Portuguese Law 40/2004 of August 18 (Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica) as amended by Decree-Law 123/2019 of August 28.
A postdoctoral research fellowship will be awarded.
6. Supervision and place where the activity will be developed
The fellowship program is part of S2AQUAcoLAB’s activities and takes place at the Estação Piloto de Piscicultura de Olhão (Av. Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, s/n, 8700-194 Olhão, Portugal), under the guidance of Dr. Sílvia Gregório, researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB.
7. Amount of monthly maintenance allowance
The amount of the fellowship is 1 901,00€, according to the table of fellowships approved by FCT, I.P.
The fellow is entitled to the reimbursement of the voluntary social insurance (1st level), if applicable, in accordance with the conditions defined in the Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação | DR. The fellow will be covered by personal accident insurance for the duration of the fellowship. The fellowship will be paid monthly via bank transfer made by S2AQUAcoLAB to the account designated by the fellow.
8. Admissibility
8.1 Requirements for applicant admissibility
Who can apply for the Research Fellowship:
A. Portuguese Citizens or citizens of Member States of the European Union;
B. Citizens of third states.
To apply for the Research Fellowship, it is necessary to:
C. Reside in Portugal permanently and habitually;
D. Not have benefited from a research fellowship in companies directly financed by FCT, regardless of their duration.
8.2 Application Admissibility Requirements
It is indispensable, under penalty of non-admission of the application:
E. Detailed and signed Curriculum Vitae of the candidate;
F. A motivation letter (maximum one-page, double space, letter Arial, size 12) where the reason for the application is clearly and briefly stated, as well as the academic and professional background, such as academic training, supplementary training, two references (just name, institution and email) and other information considered relevant for the evaluation of the CV;
G. Copy of the ID card or passport;
H. Permanent residence certificate, permanent residence permit, or long-term resident status, if applicable;
I. Documents proving the conditions required for the respective type of fellowship, in particular certificates of qualifications indicating the degree and final classification, all recognised by a Portuguese university if diplomas were obtained abroad;
J. Copy of evidence related to professional experience and training, including letters of recommendation, proof of courses or traineeships, if applicable;
K. Updated document proving professional status, indicating the nature of the employment relationship and duties, which may be replaced by a declaration of honour (link under point L) if the candidate does not perform any professional activity or provide any services;
L. Declaration of the candidate, under commitment of honour, that they meet the requirements of admission for this fellowship – a template is available in (Declaração sob compromisso de honra - BI).
Failure to submit the requested documentation implies the non-granting of a scholarship.
Failure to submit the documentation referred to in G) and K) within fifteen days of the date of notification of the results will result in the scholarship not being awarded.
9. Composition of the jury
The contest jury consists of the following members:

1st Member: Iris Silva, Researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB;
2nd Member: Pedro Pousão, Presidente da Direção do S2AQUAcoLAB;
1st Member Alternate: Florbela Soares, Researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB;
2nd Member Alternate: Renata Gonçalves, Researcher at S2AQUAcoLAB.
10. Selection methods and criteria
Eligible Applications will be scored from zero (0 minimum rating) to twenty (20 maximum rating).
Eligibility for the competitive examination: All candidates who meet the requirements set forth in this notice will be eligible to take the competitive examination.
Evaluation method: Candidates will be evaluated based on their academic record (AC) (100%). An interview will be conducted only if the selection committee deems it necessary or in the event of a tie (E).
10.1 Curricular evaluation (CA)
The curriculum evaluation (CA) will be expressed quantitatively on a scale of 0 to 20, calculated by adding the scores obtained for the following objective criteria, weighted as follows:
CA = 0.35 x A + 0.65 x B
where:
A - Evaluates the candidate's academic merit based on their doctoral degree (0–20 points);
B - Evaluate the candidate's previous experience in performing the proposed tasks:
- Data analysis using machine learning techniques (0–6 points);
- Modeling using process-based dynamic models (0–6 points);
- Model parameterization using data (0–4 points);
- Contributions to scientific publications, posters, and oral presentations in fields relevant to the position (0–4 points).
10.2. Interview (I)
Based on the Curriculum Evaluation, candidates will be ranked.
If the jury deems it necessary, or in the event of a tie, an interview will be conducted.
The interview will be conducted in person or via videoconference, and the candidate’s score will be calculated by adding the points obtained for the following criteria:
a) Knowledge of the areas covered by the project;
b) Verbal expression and fluency;
c) Ability to adapt and integrate into a team;
d) Motivation;
e) Autonomy.
These criteria will be scored on a scale of zero to twenty, with the total interview score calculated by dividing the sum of the criteria by five (0 to 20 points).
10.3 Final Classification (FC)
The candidates´ final classification will be decided by a majority of the jury.
All candidates that applied for the fellowship will be ranked according to the classification awarded by the jury, based on the CA.
If the interview (I) is necessary, the final classification (FC) will be obtained through the weighted sum of the curriculum evaluation (CA) - with a weight of 40% - and the interview (I) - with a weight of 60%.
FC = 0,4 × CA + 0,6 × I
The contest jury will hold the meetings necessary to reach a final decision, documenting in the minutes the procedures followed, as well as all elements deemed relevant to the final decision.
If there are no qualified applicants, the selection committee may decide not to award this scholarship.
The Selection Committee reserves the right to decide not to award the scholarship if it determines that none of the candidates has the appropriate profile, experience, and/or skills to carry out the work plan.
11. Reporting the results
The results of the evaluation are published at the location indicated in the opening notice and by email within 90 working days after the application submission deadline.
Candidates have a period of 10 working days after the disclosure of the results to present any objections, in the pre-hearing of interested parties and in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
The final decision shall be taken no later than 60 working days after the conclusion of the prior hearing of interested parties.
The provisions of the preceding paragraphs shall not apply where the draft decision leads to the granting of a fellowship to all applicants, in which case the draft shall be equivalent to the final decision.
12. Approval
After the conclusion of the hearing process of interested parties, the jury´s decision will be taken to the Board of Directors of S2AQUAcoLAB for approval.
13. Other information
Hiring documents:
After the selection of the candidate, the following documents/information will be requested for the purpose of hiring:
- Copy of the civil, tax, and social security identification number (if applicable);
- Document disclosing the country of residence, residence permit, or other legally equivalent document (if applicable) which should be valid at the starting date of the fellowship;
- Documents proving that the applicant meets the conditions required for the respective type of fellowship, including proof of registration;
- Declaration of commitment acknowledging the exclusivity regime;
- Certificates of qualifications;
- Bank account number - IBAN.
Fellowship contract model
After the selection of the candidate and reception of all documentation, a fellowship contract will be signed according to the model: Contrato de Bolsa de Investigação.
Fellowship evaluation
The activity developed by the fellow will be evaluated by the supervisors, who will apply the criteria defined in the: Relatório Final Bolseiro.
Management reserves the right, due to a change in circumstances as of the date of this announcement, to cancel this call for applications without making any hires.
Candidates with disabilities will be given preference in the event of a tie, and this preference takes precedence over any other legal preferences. Candidates must declare, under oath, their degree of disability, type of disability, and the means of communication/expression to be used during the selection process when submitting their formal application.
Fellowship report
At the end of each fellowship period (if applicable) the fellow must submit a report following the template available in the: Relatório Final de atividades do(a) Bolseiro(a).
