The National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research, I.P. (INIAV) hereby announces an open call for applications for the award of one Research Fellowship with master's degree (BMSc), within the scope of project/operation 415405 PEPAC-009618 “Conservação e Melhoramento Genético em Oliveira (Olea europaea L.) “Conservation and Genetic Improvement Programme in Olive Trees (Olea europaea L.)”, funded by PEPAC Portugal (Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy 2023–2027).
1. Type and number of vacancies: One Research Fellowship with master's degree (BM).
2. Requirements:
a) Master's degree in Agricultural Sciences or related field;
b) Proof of enrolment in a study cycle leading to a PhD’s degree or proof of enrolment in a non-degree course, to be submitted by the time the contract is signed.
3. Preference Factors:
a) Enrollment in a doctoral program;
b) Curricular experience and/or proof of professional experience in the field of olive growing, especially in the secondary evaluation of the agronomic and technological characteristics of olive groves, comprising at least two years of activity in this domain;
c) Ability of verbal expression and fluency in Portuguese and English (written and spoken);
d) Computer skills;
e) Professional rigor and good teamwork ability;
f) Resilience, critical spirit and ability to work autonomously;
g) Driving license, category B;
h) Immediate availability.
4. Working Plan:
The fellow will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the activities planned within the program, with a particular focus on experimental field activities associated with olive groves conservation and breeding program. Their responsibilities include participation in the prospecting of genetic material, vegetative propagation of prospected accessions, control of greenhouse and plant conditions, morphological/phenological characterization of olive germplasm, agronomic evaluation in collections, and agronomic evaluation of segregating F1 generations. The fellow will also participate in the collection, recording and processing of experimental data, and to other technical activities required to achieve the program’s objectives.
5. Legislation and Regulation:
Statute of Scientific Research Grant, approved by Law nº 40/2004, of 18 August, amended and republished by Decree-Law nº 202/2012 of 27 August and amended by Decree-Law nº 233/2012 of 29 October, Law nº 12/2013 of 29 January and Decree-Law nº 89/2013 of 9 July and Decree-Law nº 123/2019. Regulation nº 950/2019, of 16 December, which approves the FCT, I.P. Research Grants Regulation available at (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento) under Decree-Law nº 123/2019, of 28 August, which updated several provisions of the EBI.
6. Duration of the Concession:
The research grant will be awarded for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for an additional period of the same duration, starting on 1 December 2026.
At the time of signing the contract, candidates must provide proof of enrollment in a doctoral program or in a non-degree course, in accordance with the FCT Research Scholarship Regulations; in the latter case, the duration of the scholarship may not exceed one year.
7. Monthly allowance:
According to the values of the Research Grants awarded by FCT in Portugal (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), the monthly maintenance allowance is 1359,64 €/month, and the form of payment to the grant holder is by bank transfer.
The monthly grant amount is according to the grant chart of the grants directly awarded by FCT, IP, in the country (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores) Regulation nº 950/2019 of 16 December. The periodicity of payment of the grant is monthly and by bank transfer.
Research grant recipients are covered by personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme, may ensure the exercise of the right to social security by joining the voluntary social insurance scheme in accordance with the Code of Contributory Regimes of Social Security.
8. Workplace:
The work will be carried out at the National Institute for Agrarian and Veterinary Research, I.P. (INIAV), at the Elvas Innovation Hub.
9. Technical orientation:
The fellow will be supervised by the Researcher PhD António Manuel Cordeiro.
10. Additional documents:
The application must contain the following documents:
- Detailed Curriculum vitae (dated and signed) - mandatory;
- Motivation letter (dated and signed) addressed to the Researcher of INIAV, I.P., PhD António Manuel Cordeiro, which must include the candidate's full identification and reference to the present call for applications no. 36/2026/BM;
- Documents (digital copies) proving the elements considered most relevant and academic qualifications certificates - mandatory;
- Declaration of honor regarding conditions not mentioned in official documents, in particular availability for the development of laboratory and field work, within INIAV, I.P. working hours;
- Other documents that the applicant considers relevant for the evaluation of his/her technical and scientific merit.
11. Selection method and its value - Selection criteria:
The selection method, which is eliminatory in nature, will consist of curriculum evaluation and an interview, if the jury considers it necessary.
The criteria for evaluation of the applications shall be based on the combined assessment of the following criteria:
AQ - Academic qualifications;
PE - Professional experience;
PA - Professional training and profile adequacy;
E - If the jury deems it necessary, individual interviews will be conducted with the candidates to assess the suitability of their profile.
Formula for evaluation: CF=0,4AQ+0,3PE+0,3PA or CF=0,4AQ+0,3PE+0,2PA+0,1E
12. Composition of the Selection Jury:
The jury has the following composition
President – Researcher PhD Antonio Manuel Cordeiro (INIAV).
1st and 2nd effective members – Researcher PhD Carla Sofia Franca Inês (INIAV); Researcher PhD Maria Helena Sapeta (INIAV)
Substitute Member – Researcher PhD Maria da Graça M. Pereira (INIAV).
13. Announcement / notification of results:
Based on the classification obtained by the candidates, the jury will proceed to their ranking. The lists of admitted and excluded candidates and the final classification will be sent to the respective e-mails addresses and posted at the INIAV, I.P. facilities in Elvas.
After the publication of the results, the candidates shall be considered automatically notified, therefore, if they wish to submit comments on the hearing of the interested parties, they may do so within 10 working days from the date of publication. At the end of this period, the selected candidate shall be notified in writing of the award of the scholarship and communication of the starting date.
In case of withdrawal or abandonment by the selected candidate, the next best-ranked candidate will be notified, and so on.
