Offer Description
Applications are open for a Research Grant (BI) within the scope of the project “BioVal – Intelligent Pyrolysis System for Transforming Agroforestry By-products into Biochar,” funded by the “LaCaixa Foundation and FCT through the Promove Program (2025 Call – Pilot Projects),” under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Area:
Electrical Engineering
2. Admission Requirements:
- Enrollment in a PhD program in the field of Intelligent Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or related scientific areas, or enrollment in a non-degree course;
- Possession of a Master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related scientific areas;
- Alignment of the candidate's background and experience with the objectives of the work to be developed;
- The candidate must possess relevant experience in automation systems, intelligent control, PCB design, and system integration;
- Proficiency in the English language (written and oral communication) will be considered an asset.
3. Work Plan:
This work plan includes the development of the following main tasks:
- Conducting a literature review on sensing, control and communication components, and hardware component integration for systems to be used in a pyrolysis furnace context, applied within the green and circular economy.
- Identification and definition of the various automation and/or electronic components to be used, particularly sensors, controllers, and communication components.
- Development of the automation and/or electronic schematic and the intelligent control system.
- Testing and validation of the various components and systems across different development phases, particularly during testing, integration, and real-world environment stages.
- Writing technical reports and scientific publications.
4. Objectives:
Study, design, and development of an intelligent monitoring and control system for integration into an intelligent pyrolysis furnace, to be applied within the context of the green and circular economy.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
Scientific Research Grant Holder Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004 of August 18, as currently in force; FCT, I.P. Research Grant Regulations, currently in force (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/RBi_Republicado_2025.pdf); Regulation No. 522/2020, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 113, of June 12 – Research Grant Regulations of the Polytechnic University of Bragança.
6. Workplace and scientific supervision:
The work will be carried out at the Intelligent Control, Automation, and Robotics Laboratory (LCAR) of the Polytechnic University of Bragança, under the scientific supervision of Dr. José Barbosa.
7. Grant duration:
The grant will have an initial duration of 3 months, with a scheduled start date of October 5, 2026 (with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 6 months, including the initial period).
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
The grant amount corresponds to 1,359.64€, according to the table of grant values awarded by FCT, I.P. in the country.
Grant recipients will benefit from personal accident insurance and, if they are not covered by any social protection scheme, they may ensure the exercise of the right to social security by joining the voluntary social security scheme, under the terms provided for in the Code of Contribution Regimes of the Social Security System. The grant amount will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
9. Selection methods and their respective valuation:
The selection methods to be used will be the following:
a) Curriculum evaluation and its suitability for the work in question (40%);
b) Experience, according to the desired profile (40%);
c) Scientific curriculum, considering publications and participation in projects (20%).
The Jury may call candidates for an interview if it wishes to clarify the CV for a better evaluation of the criteria defined in Selection Methods.
The jury may not grant the grant if the candidates' classification is lower than 9.5.
10. Composition of the Selection Jury:
The Jury will be composed of Doctors José Barbosa (president), Flávia Pires (member), João Paulo Coelho (member), and Hélder Gomes (alternate).
11. Method of publication/notification of results:
The communications and results of the evaluation will be published through the UPB application submission portal or, if necessary, by email notification.
12. Application deadline:
The competition is open from 09/18/2026 to 10/01/2026.
13. Application Submission Method:
Applications can be submitted through the UPB application submission portal (http://concursos.ipb.br), including the following documents:
a) Curriculum Vitae;
b) Academic qualifications certificate;
c) Letter of motivation;
d) Other documents considered relevant for the evaluation of the application.
Documents proving the holding of academic degrees or diplomas, or enrollment in an academic degree or diploma, may be waived during the registration phase, being replaced by a declaration of honor from the candidate, with verification of this condition being mandatory during the grant contracting phase.
Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries need recognition by a Portuguese Institution in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of January 25. Presentation of the acknowledgment is mandatory for signing the contract.
14. Deadlines and procedures for complaints and appeals:
If the decision to be made is unfavorable to the granting of the requested grant, candidates have a period of 10 working days, after the date of publication of the evaluation results, to express their opinion, if they wish, in a prior hearing, under the terms provided for in the Administrative Procedure Code.
An appeal against the final decision may be made to the Rector of UPB within 15 working days after the respective notification.

Selection process
The selection method to be used is as follows: a) Curriculum evaluation and its suitability for the work in question (40%); b) Experience, in accordance with the desired profile (40%); c) Scientific track record, considering publications and participation in projects (20%). The Selection Committee may invite candidates for an interview if clarification regarding the CV is required to better assess the criteria defined under "Selection Methods." The Committee may decide not to award the scholarship if the candidates' scores are below 9.5 points.
Additional comments
Documents proving the ownership of academic degrees or diplomas, or enrollment in an academic degree or diploma, may be dispensed with during the application stage, being replaced by a declaration of honor by the candidate, and verification of this condition is mandatory during the grant contracting stage. Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries require recognition by a Portuguese Institution in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of January 25th. The presentation of recognition is mandatory for the signing of the contract.
