A call is now open for the award of one (1) Research Grant for PhD Students within the scope of the project COMPETE2030-FEDER-00747500 – TREAT-POP: Digital Twin Model as a Tool to Improve the Surgical Approach to Pelvic Organ Prolapse, funded by national funds through FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., under the following conditions:
Scientific area: Mechanical Engineering and/or Biomedical Engineering.
Work plan: Development of a Digital Twin of the Pelvic Cavity for the Study of Pelvic Organ Prolapse.
1. Grant duration and regime:
The grant will have a duration of 6 months, with an expected start date following the communication of the FCT funding decision regarding the project, and may be renewed up to the maximum limit permitted under the applicable regulations.
The awarding of the grant does not establish or imply a legal employment relationship. The grant is carried out on an exclusive dedication basis, and the Fellow will be granted the status of Research Fellow, in accordance with the provisions of the current Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P.
2. Activity scope:
The work to be carried out falls within Task 1 of the TREAT-POP project and aims at the development of a reference Digital Twin Model (DTM) of the pelvic cavity for the study of pelvic organ prolapse.
The fellow will participate in the segmentation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, three-dimensional reconstruction of pelvic anatomy, development of computational models, implementation of morphing techniques for adaptation to different patients, and integration of experimental clinical data.
The developed model will constitute the basis for the remaining project tasks, enabling the creation of patient-specific models to support biomechanical studies and surgical planning.
3. Scientific supervision:
Professor Elisabete Silva and Professor António Augusto Fernandes. The work will be carried out at the facilities of INEGI and FEUP, in Porto, Portugal.
4. Academic Qualifications:
Applicants must hold an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or Bioengineering.
The following qualifications will be preferentially considered during the evaluation process:
- Experience in numerical simulation, particularly using Abaqus and Python.
Additional preferential conditions:
- Expertise in simulation techniques and the assessment of biomechanical properties of soft tissues and related materials.
- Experience in the construction of computational models through segmentation of medical images (MRI or CT) using Mimics software.
- Scientific publications in journals indexed in the Web of Science (ISI), in the Health Sciences field, preferably in biomechanics of soft tissues and abdominal wall and pelvic floor disorders.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Initiative and autonomy.
- Ability to communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Portuguese and English, both written and spoken, with a good level of competence.
5. Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries shall be registered by a Portuguese institution, according to the DL 66/2018, of August 16th, and the Ordinance nr. 33/2019, of January 25th. It is mandatory to present the certificate to sign the contract.

6. Monthly allowance:
The scholarship amount corresponds to €1359,64 according to the table of values for scholarships directly awarded by FCT, I.P. (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf) paid at the end of the respective month by bank transfer. The payment of personal accident insurance will also be ensured, as well as the payment of voluntary social insurance if applicable.
7. Applicable Legislation:
Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004 of August 18th, in the current wording published by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of August 28; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force (Regulation No. 950 / 2019 of 16 December https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt).
8. Evaluation criteria:
This evaluation results in the selection of applications that go on to the interview stage. The final evaluation is calculated based on a weight of 60% of the CV and 40% of the interview. The selection criteria are as follows: academic background, qualifications, adequacy between the candidate's profile and the objectives of the grant, motivation and relevant experience for the project in question, according to the admission requirements described above.
The jury reserves the right not to fill the position if there are no candidates that meet the requirements. If the candidate placed 1st does not accept the scholarship or withdraws from the scholarship during the respective work program, the candidate placed 2nd may be invited to accept the scholarship. This procedure may be repeated in subsequent cases of non-acceptance or withdrawal, according to the decision of the scientific supervisor, respecting the order of the list contained in the minutes of the selection process.

Members: Professor António Augusto Fernandes and Dr Nilza Ramião.
Alternate Member: Professor Marco Parente.
10. Publication/notification of results:
The final evaluation results (ordered list) will be publicized in www.inegi.pt.
After being notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal by email (gestao.pessoas@inegi.up.pt).
