Job Description

The role of the research interviewer (Level 3) involves conducting structured face to face interviews with people who regularly inject drugs at designated sites for the Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS). The IDRS is an annual research project run by the Drug Trends Team at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC). This is a short-term casual role. The interviews will be held in Canberra, 22-26 June and potentially 29-30 June.

This role will:

  • Participate in virtual training sessions, reading through manuals and interviewing resources, conducting practice interviews, and attending briefings (face-to-face and via telephone).
  • Follow clear instructions from the team coordinator including health and safety training, data collection training and data entry training.
  • Follow instructions from the team coordinator on site specific interviewing processes and protocols.
  • Support the data collection team by completing interviews in a timely manner and reporting to the team coordinator of any issues that may arise.
  • Ensure all interviewing is conducted in a professional, respectful, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

The Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS) is an annual research project run by Drug Trends at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC). The role of the casual research interviewer involves conducting 1-hour long structured face-to-face surveys with people who regularly inject illicit drugs at designated sites. Guidance and training on the survey, data collection methodology, drug knowledge and issue management will be provided via training presentations, Q&As and briefings prior to interviewing. The role requires basic written and verbal communication skills, ability to follow detailed instructions, attention to detail and the use of basic IT equipment (tablets, iPads, laptops, etc.). Interviewers are required to reside in Canberra, Australia.

A person engaged is generally expected to have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience collecting quantitative data or conducting interviews as part of a research project in Alcohol and other Drugs (AOD) is desirable.
  • Basic knowledge of drug trends is desirable.
  • Ability to conduct interviews in a respectful, ethical, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with a wide variety of people.

Expected hours and duration:

  • The IDRS training is expected to commence in mid-June. Data collection is scheduled for 22 – 26 June & 29 – 30 June (if needed). Interviewers are expected to be available between the hours of 9am – 5pm during the data collection period.
  • We will be conducting these interviews at the Health Centre in civic.
