Research Laboratory Specialist Associate
The Lorberbaum Laboratory is seeking a full-time Research Laboratory Specialist Associate in the Department of Pharmacology and Caswell Diabetes Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of Dr. David Lorberbaum on projects exploring molecular mechanisms that regulate pancreatic islet development and function using genetically modified mice and human pluripotent stem cell cultures. This is an ideal position for candidates seeking additional hands-on experience before applying to graduate school to pursue biomedical research careers in PhD or MD programs, but all interested parties will be considered. A two-year commitment is strongly preferred.
- Maintenance and genotyping of mouse colonies
- Maintenance of cell culture, including human pluripotent stem cell derived islets differentiations + This generally involves weekend (Saturday and Sunday) maintenance at least 2x/month but you will not be expected to work more than 40 hours each week.
- Molecular, histological, and cell biology techniques + PCR, RNA isolation, qPCR, next generation sequencing, immunofluorescence staining, Western blot, and ELISA
- Microscopy
- Ordering and restocking reagents for the laboratory
- Responsible for writing certain components of progress reports and manuscripts.
- May co-author publications and present results in meetings.
- After being trained, the successful candidate may provide supervision for future students and/or other technicians. The level of supervision will be commensurate with the appointees? experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Genetics, or a related field with at least 1 year relevant experience
- Mouse colony handling/genotyping/maintenance
- Willingness to work with laboratory mice and human pluripotent stem cells
- Hands-on experience in cell culture with aseptic technique
- Ability to document and communicate in a clear and timely manner
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work semi-independently on research projects
In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.
- Master's Degree in Biology, Genetics, or a related field
- Experience in routine molecular, histological, and cell biology techniques
- Knowledge of pancreas development and/or function
