Research Laboratory Technician (1 year, Fixed Term)

The Department of Archaeology seeks to appoint a full-time (1.0 FTE), fixed-term (1 year, in the first instance) Research Laboratory Technician. This post is based in the Department of Archaeology laboratories on the Downing Site. The laboratories are devoted to research into archaeomaterials and environmental archaeology as well as wider archaeological research through a variety of methods.

The duties of the role holder include technical support for research and teaching in sample preparation for analysis in archaeomaterials and environmental archaeology. The role holder will work primarily in the geoarchaeology and sample preparation laboratories. The work will involve archaeological and environmental material, including preparing samples such as thin sections, polished blocks and others for microscopic and geochemical analyses, supporting analytical work and the running of the laboratory.

The post holder will work with two other technicians to provide technical support for the academic staff and Lab Directors, as well as visiting and in-house researchers working with material in the department laboratories. They will be expected to attend and contribute to weekly laboratory group meetings as well as less frequent technician support meetings.

Candidates will have a good standard of general education, (A level, NVQ level 3, or an equivalent level of practical experience.) Candidates will have a basic knowledge of science and experience of laboratory work. Knowledge of sample preparation, basic archaeological and environmental sciences, as well as microscopy and geochemical analysis, are desirable.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 years in the first instance.
