The Lab is part of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and co-sponsored by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR).
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking an exceptional Research Manager to spearhead a groundbreaking initiative at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab (DEL) focused on tracking and measuring the economic and societal impacts of AI and related technology. Reporting to Faculty Director Erik Brynjolfsson, this pivotal role will help build a suite of real-time measurement tools, including a novel AI Economic Index and economic dashboard that tracks AI's diffusion and its economic impacts. This role is central to our mission to generate data and evidence-based insights that will inform better policy, investment, and organizational decisions. The ideal candidate will manage the project's execution from fundraising and grant writing to data strategy, analysis, and reporting. They will also work to disseminate findings through public-facing websites, white papers, events, and policy briefs. They will manage data acquisition, manage research assistants, and contractors. They will work closely with post-docs and research scientists within the lab. They will develop, implement, and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the assigned academic program and participate in program strategy development, long-range planning, and partnership development.
The initial appointment will be 3-year fixed term. The fixed-term may be renewed for additional years based on business needs.
CORE DUTIES:
- Develop and manage research programs by conducting research activities, including outreach to varied stakeholders within the program, assigning resources and making program improvement recommendations that impact policies and programs.
- Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research.
- Source, collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
- Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities.
- Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.
- May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients.
- Develop or contribute to outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships, and fundraising/funding.
- Coach and mentor program staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and three years of administrative experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Preferred: Applicants with an advanced degree in economics, experience creating indexes, forecasts, or economics data-focused reports, and a strong passion for economic research, artificial intelligence, and data analysis/visualization. The candidate should also have Special Sworn Status with the US Census Bureau. Experience managing budgets and writing grant proposals preferred.
Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree in economics strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to direct the work of others for tasks/projects requiring supervision.
- Relevant subject matter knowledge (econometrics, forecasting, data analysis, data visualization, economic research)
- Substantial experience with MS Office, G Suite, and analytical programs such as Python, Stata, and R.
- Ability to prioritize workload.
- Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
- Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in economic modeling and analysis.
- Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.
Certifications and Licenses:

Remote:
This role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures. The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate.
The expected pay range for this position is $80,648 to $137,207 per annum for remote positions.
The expected pay range for this position is $116,966 to $150,114 per annum for hybrid positions.
