Research Scientist 1
RESEARCH SCIENTIST 1, Research Laboratory of Electronics, will join Prof. William Oliver's Engineering Quantum Systems (EQuS) group in MIT's Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE). This role focuses on original research in materials science and fabrication engineering for quantum computing, particularly using a new 200-mm multi-chamber MBE system and existing tools in MIT. Nano. The Research Scientist will lead efforts performing original research in growing and characterizing superconducting metals and interfaces to enhance qubit coherence times; develop and maintain fabrication process flows, patterning materials into electrical circuits, and supporting the research needs of graduate students and postdocs; conduct installation, operation, and maintenance of fabrication tools, including the MBE system arriving in November 2025; and disseminate research through publications and presentations, assist with proposal writing and sponsor reporting, and contribute to program development.
REQUIRED: PhD in materials science, physics, electrical engineering, or related field; a minimum of three years of experience with growth and fabrication tools in a research setting; expertise in high-vacuum deposition systems (e.g., MBE); experience with superconducting qubit fabrication; strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills; ability to conduct independent research across materials science, fabrication, and device physics.
Position may require working nights and weekends. This position reports to Prof. William D. Oliver and Dr. Jeff Grover. This is a 12-month appointment with potential for renewal based on funding availability.
