Research Specialist
Position Overview
The Research Specialist provides technical support for the core imaging facilities in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS). Responsibilities are accomplished by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline acquired through advanced education or specialized training. Duties include providing research expertise and training for instrument users on a range of optical and electron microscopes as well as the development and execution of fee-for-service imaging projects. The Research Specialist also assists with facilities operation, which includes resolving technical issues, administrative tasks such as record keeping and billing, the development of facility policies and procedures, and supervision of junior staff.
Responsibilities
- Provide consultation and support for instrument users, including basic and advanced training in microscope operation, and guidance in microscopy-related experimental design, specimen preparation and data analysis.
- Perform microscopy and laboratory equipment maintenance.
- Independent execution of fee-for-service image acquisition for UMBC and off-campus clients.
- Administrative duties including but not limited to monitoring equipment reservations and usage, record keeping, ordering, and maintaining supplies, billing, and assistance in the development of standard operating procedures and facility policy.
- Assist in the training and direction of facility staff and student workers.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in life science, materials science or another related field.
- At least two years of hands-on experience using an advanced light microscope such as confocal or an electron microscope, such as TEM or SEM.
- A working knowledge of microscopy fundamentals, best practices and sample preparation techniques.
- Ability to perform essential duties independently with attention to detail.
- Effective time management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks or projects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a commitment to exemplary customer service.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in life science, materials science or another related field.
- Teaching and/or training others to use scientific instruments.
- Instrument maintenance, including cleaning, alignment, and quality control.
- Image processing and analysis.
