Position Highlights
The Animal Welfare Program at the University of Arizona is in search of a Research Specialist. The Research Specialist will be a key member of the Animal Welfare Program and contribute to the administrative support for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Under general supervision, the successful candidate will work in conjunction with senior IACUC program personnel in completing a variety of daily and cyclical tasks to aid in the function of the IACUC and University researchers. The Animal Welfare Program (AWP) oversees animal activity at The University of Arizona and serves as the administrative and regulatory support for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC is charged with the protection of animal research and teaching subjects and is responsible for reviewing and approving all activities utilizing vertebrate animals for research, teaching and testing, ensuring compliance with federal animal welfare regulations, inspecting animal facilities and investigator laboratories, investigating animal concerns, and overseeing training and educational programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for the management of IACUC protocol and amendment submissions, to include:
- Perform administrative pre-review of protocols and amendments.
- Manage assigned protocol/amendment submissions during the review process.
- Perform protocol personnel requests.
- Perform grant congruency reviews.
- Preparation of protocol and amendment documents for monthly meetings.
- Assist with development and review of SOPs and Guidances, including procedural SOPs for researchers.
- Assist with organizing, scheduling, and administering semi-annual inspection process, to include:
- Identify peripheral lab locations requiring semi-annual inspection.
- Schedule times for labs to be inspected, and members to perform inspections.
- Performing inspections of use locations, as needed and regulations allow.
- Curate and enter inspection findings to database.
- Communicate findings and follow-up required with investigators and staff.
- Assisting with preparation for and attending Post-Approval Monitoring (PAM) inspections. Including planning, scheduling and making forms.
- Plan and facilitate Pre-Use inspections for PI lab locations, including scheduling, completing appropriate forms, post-inspection documentation, and follow-up with investigators.
- IACUC Meetings:
- Preparation of protocol and amendment documents for monthly meetings.
- Attend in person monthly IACUC meetings and assist with taking notes and attendance.
- Preparation of documents, charts, and graphs for meetings.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to perform accurate data entry.
- Ability to adapt to a busy, changing work environment and ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of medical or research terminology.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience in a field appropriate to the area of assignment.
- Three years of related experience OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in working with a large and varied group of University personnel.
Experience working in a research lab or setting and/or performing animal research activities.
