Research Support Assistant
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Associate's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in psychology, speech and hearing science, linguistics, cognitive science, neuroscience, or related field. Experience with experimental research on human subjects (e.g., in psychology).
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in psychology in hand, or to be obtained by June 1, 2026. Experience with word processing and spreadsheet programs. Experience with data collecting in a lab. Experience with statistical analysis. Experience with eye-tracking hardware and software. Experience with functional MRI (fMRI) or other neuroimaging tools. Experience with audio equipment, speech processing or speech synthesis 1-packages, and/or acoustic analysis. Experience with computer programming (any language).
Brief Description of Duties:
The Cognition, Auditory Neuroscience, And Language (CANAL) lab in the Department of Psychology at Stony Brook University is seeking a Research Support Assistant to provide critical support and management for research studies on the cognitive and neural mechanisms through which listeners comprehend spoken language. This is a two-year full-time position, with a one-year extension possible. We envision a start date of July 1, but this is flexible from June 1 - September 1.
They will support the research by assisting with the design and development of new experimental protocols, collecting data using behavioral, eye tracking, fMRI and other techniques. Projects focus on a range of topics including how listeners adapt to the statistical regularities in the language input, how knowledge of what someone might say in some context influences how listeners perceive speech, and how listeners adapt to different accents. This position requires strong organizational skills as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Successful candidates will:

- Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy, and strong organizational skills and data management ability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to learn new technical skills quickly
- Fluency in English
- Ability to mentor undergraduate students and work collaboratively in a team.
Duties include:
- Developing and programming experiments.
- Collecting, managing and analyzing data.
- Mentoring of student researchers.
- Contributing to IRB protocols and record-keeping.
- Contributing to manuscripts/publications.
- Administrative and project management.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
