Minimum Qualifications: Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Position Summary: The Research Technician will be involved in research and clinical assays focused on, flow cytometry, cell culture, and laboratory oversight. Duties include performance of flow cytometry assays for clinical testing and research, cell culture assays and maintenance, molecular experiments (e.g. DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, western blotting, electrophoresis), and laboratory management.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:
- Flow cytometry assay performance, preparation of reagents, monitoring of laboratory supplies, maintaining clinical sample log.
- Molecular techniques – DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, protein isolation, immunoblotting
- Cell culture techniques – preparation of reagents, cell culture maintenance.
Physical Demands: Sit or stand for extended periods of time.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Cell biology techniques – flow cytometry- routine performance a clinical flow cytometry assay for the diagnosis of lymphoma and leukemia in cats and dogs as well as research based flow cytometry. Receive, log, and process veterinary patient samples and acquire flow cytometry data. Communicate with laboratory clients about sample submissions. Maintain supplies and reagents to perform the clinical flow cytometry assay as well maintain a database of clinical sample data. Reproducibility of data and clear presentation of data will be a measure of success. (65% of time)
- General laboratory maintenance – autoclaving, glass washing, stock ordering, and inventory organization, preparation of solutions, and equipment maintenance. (20% of time)
- Molecular biology techniques – PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, electrophoresis, immunoblotting. Cell culture techniques – aseptic cell culture techniques, cell culture maintenance, maintain cell culture reagents. Reproducibility of data and clear presentation of data will be a measure of success. (15% of time)
