Position Highlights

A Research Technician II position is available in the AEGIS Consortium at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. The candidate will have the opportunity to engage in scientific support for an ongoing lab project, in collaboration with other members of the lab. The successful applicant will be a well-rounded, enthusiastic individual with basic training in biology and experience performing research in a laboratory setting. This individual should be detailed oriented, conscientious, and able to follow instructions, and have the ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.

The primary purpose of this position is to conduct immunology research with in vitro and in vivo models of infection and immunity, as well as of the long-term maintenance of the immune system This research involves rodent and/or human tissue research, including, but not limited to, collection of samples, preparation of samples for various assays, performance of the assays and initial analysis of results.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Organize and perform a variety of lab tests and operations involved in timmunological research. To include recording results, making observations, analyzing data and providing initial interpretation of results.
  • Assist in developing procedures and techniques to fit specific experiment design requirements.
  • Collaborate with the PI in the development of new strategies and techniques in experimental design modifications.
  • Participate with the laboratory team in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative results.
  • Provides routine and technical administrative support to research projects.
  • Assist in data analysis from ongoing experiments and provide an additional opinion regarding the validity of data obtained.
  • Adapt physical data to computerized statistical data for further analysis.
  • Create and manage laboratory-shared spreadsheets for ongoing studies to simplify the sharing of data between lab staff.
  • Operate and maintain experimental equipment essential for laboratory/rodent colony function, including, but not limited to, thermocyclers, shakers, flow cytometers, analytical balance, centrifuge machine, automatic pipettes, manual pipettes, and sonicator.
  • Facilitate the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment via self-repair or company repair.
  • Under PI supervision, Performs stereotaxic rodent surgeries, tissue preparation and processing, and analysis of resulting data:
    • Assist in behavioral experimentation.
    • Assist in rodent surgery.
    • Conduct validation experiments such as Immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, RiboTag immunoprecipitiation, qRT-PCR and Tissue sectioning/mounting.
  • Analyze data and reports findings and summarize the success of ongoing experiments:
    • Facilitate lab operations/lab meetings and schedule extracurricular lab events.
    • Facilitate communication between the lab and outside entities.
    • Oversee RLSS compliance for all lab members.
    • Manage rodent colony and oversee laboratory genotyping.
    • Conduct routine lab inspections and maintain current laboratory chemical/supply inventory.
  • Assist in performing non-survival rodent procedures such as cervical dislocations, live tissue collection, and perfusions.
  • Write standard operating procedures and ensure those procedures are adhered to by all laboratory staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field.
  • Molecular biology experience.
  • Previous research experience (internship, independent study).
  • Experience with rodent surgery.
