Researcher - After the End of Crises

The Ethox Centre is an internationally-recognised multidisciplinary bioethics research centre located within Oxford Population Health in the University of Oxford.

We are seeking a Researcher from the Humanities/ Social Sciences disciplines, to join the Wellcome Trust funded discovery project After the end: Lived experiences and aftermaths of Diseases, Disasters and Drugs in global health.

The After the End project seeks to explore issues related to time justice, waiting, memory, care, trauma and ideas of what constitutes ‘an end’, ‘the right time’ and what it means to be ‘late’ in relation to diseases, disasters, and access to health resources such as drugs and medicines. This project is interdisciplinary and draws on expertise from history, anthropology, law, sociology, ethics, literary studies, cognitive psychology and public health to shape policy and practice. Together these disciplines explore innovative methodologies drawing on poetry, photography, immersive XR and film to produce creative and engaging outputs which explore what constitutes an end, who should decide and what should happen after.

This is an exciting and varied role that involves developing and delivering the research objectives of the project. You will be working closely with Professor Patricia Kingori and the project collaborators in the UK, Sierra Leone, South-East Asia and Brazil, and will be engaging with a variety of key stakeholders including academic collaborators, external partners, fieldworkers and colleagues. The role will include undertaking reviews and analyses of relevant literature, undertaking qualitative interviews and research, drafting papers and supporting the methodological and conceptual development of the research.

You will be responsible for managing your academic time and administrative activities, adapting existing and developing new research methodologies, as well as contributing to ideas for new research projects.

You will hold (or be close to completion of) a PhD/DPhil in a Social Science, Humanities or other relevant subject. You will have some experience and sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work effectively within the research programme. You will also have the ability to work independently and have excellent communication skills.

This is a full time (part time considered), fixed term for 2 years.

The closing date for applications is noon on 29th June 2026

You will be required to upload a CV and a cover letter as part of your online application. The cover letter should clearly describe how you meet each of the selection criteria listed in the job description.
