Job Announcement for the Award of an Employment Contract
The INEGI is opening a recruitment process for the hiring of a PhD Researcher in the field of next-generation energy harvesting and storage systems, under an exclusive dedication regime, to carry out scientific research activities within the scientific domain of Physical Engineering. The position will be offered under a fixed-term employment contract of uncertain duration, within the scope of LAETA LA/P/0079/2020, the Multiannual Funding Programme for the Associate Laboratory, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
This recruitment is carried out under the provisions of Decree-Law No. 57/2016 of 29 August, as amended by Law No. 57/2017 of 19 July, the applicable supplementary legislation, and the Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law No. 7/2009 of 12 February, in its current version. The grounds for the recruitment are the execution of a specific, precisely defined and non-permanent activity, with the employment contract being mandatorily supported by externally funded resources, regardless of their source.
1. Context
This position is dedicated to research in the synthesis of polymers and carbon-based materials, as well as the fabrication and characterisation of ferroelectric-based energy harvesting and storage devices. The research activities aim to accelerate technology readiness levels (TRLs), the validation of scientific results, and their transfer to industry in key thematic areas of the Associate Laboratory, namely Energy, Transport, Space and Defence Technologies, and Resilient Industry.
2. Applicable Legislation
Decree-Law No. 57/2016 of 29 August, as amended by Law No. 57/2017 of 19 July, the respective complementary legislation, and the Portuguese Labour Code approved by Law No. 7/2009 of 12 February, in its current version.
The termination of funding, the closure of the project, or the completion of the tasks constituting the object of this recruitment procedure shall determine the expiry of the contract, in accordance with Article 345(1) of the Labour Code. Specifically, the employer shall notify the employee of the contract termination with a minimum notice period of 7, 30, or 60 days, depending on whether the contract duration has been up to six months, between six months and two years, or longer than two years.

4. Monthly Salary Level
In accordance with Article 5(1) of Regulatory Decree No. 11-A/2017 of 29 December, this recruitment procedure is opened at remuneration level 33 of the Single Remuneration Table (TRU).
5. Selection Committee
In accordance with Article 13 of the RJEC, the Selection Committee shall comprise:
Chairperson: Professor Helena Braga (FEUP, INEGI).
Members: Professor Francisco Pires (FEUP, INEGI) and Dr. Margarida Machado (INEGI).
6. Admission Requirements
6.1 General Requirements
The call is open to Portuguese, foreign, and stateless candidates who hold a PhD degree, or recognition of a PhD degree under Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August, and possess a professional curriculum demonstrating an appropriate profile for the activities to be carried out.
6.2 Specific Requirements
PhD in Physical Engineering and Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering.
The following qualifications and experience will be considered preferential in the evaluation of candidates:
- Knowledge of batteries and solid-state electrolytes.
- Knowledge of electrochemical characterisation techniques (PEIS, CV, charge/discharge testing).
- Experience with Scanning Kelvin Probe microscopy (SKP).
- Battery cell assembly.
- Materials characterisation and optimisation.
- Energy storage systems.
- Ethics and integrity in research.
- Analytical and critical thinking.
- Collaboration and teamwork.
- Scientific communication skills.
- Commitment to quality and scientific rigour.
- Adaptability.
- Scientific leadership and mentoring of early-career researchers.
- Innovation and creativity.
- Excellent proficiency in English, both written and spoken; knowledge of Portuguese will be considered an asset.
Candidates who do not meet the requirements described above will not be admitted to the competition. Applications submitted outside the electronic form available at INEGI's website, by email, or by post, as well as applications lacking the required documentation, or containing illegible, incorrectly completed, or invalid documents, will be excluded.
The Selection Committee may request supporting documentation whenever necessary to verify the information provided by candidates.
7. Candidate Evaluation
The selection process will be based on the assessment of candidates' scientific and professional curriculum.
The evaluation will focus on the relevance, quality, and timeliness of:
- Scientific, technological, and academic output produced during the last four years and considered most relevant by the candidate;
- Applied or practice-based research activities carried out during the last five years and considered most impactful by the candidate;
- Outreach and knowledge dissemination activities conducted during the last four years, particularly those promoting scientific practices.
Candidates will be scored on a scale from 0 to 20 points.
8. Evaluation Criteria
Particular emphasis will be placed on the curriculum vitae and on the contributions identified by the candidate as most relevant over the last four years.
- Scientific and professional curriculum assessment: 90%
- Interview (if deemed necessary by the Selection Committee and limited to a maximum of three candidates with the highest curriculum scores): 10%
If an interview takes place, candidates must obtain at least 10 points in both the curriculum assessment and the interview.
If no interview is conducted, the final ranking will correspond to the curriculum assessment score.
The Selection Committee reserves the right not to award the position if none of the candidates demonstrates an appropriate profile for the proposed work plan.

Failure to comply with these requirements will result in the immediate rejection of the application.

Results of the selection process will be communicated to candidates by email. Following notification, candidates will have ten working days to submit any comments.
