Position Summary

The Operations & Facilities Management Department (OFMD) at WashU Medicine provides essential services that sustain the medical campus’ mission of excellence in patient care, research, and education. OFMD manages the maintenance and operation of more than 65 buildings, encompassing over 14.8 million gross square feet, including the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot Neuroscience Research Building (NRB), home to one of the world’s largest concentrations of neuroscientists. The Response Officer I is a personable and service-oriented professional who plays a crucial role in campus safety in an unarmed capacity. They work in a collaborative, team-based environment and assist Response Officers II and Leads in both emergency and non-emergency situations, providing support to faculty, staff, patients, and visitors with confidence and empathy. Responsibilities include patrolling the campus, offering support to the campus community, and enforcing University policies and criminal laws. Assignments may involve vehicle or foot patrol as part of a coordinated team effort. All officers should be prepared to administer general first aid as part of their role.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist Response Officers II during emergency and non-emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, etc.) on campus.
  • Provides Emergency Management support during larger-scale incidents.
  • Provide outstanding customer service with a friendly, professional demeanor.
  • Perform patrols, building checks, and safety assessments.
  • Assist visitors, open doors, provide escorts, and assist with wayfinding.
  • Gather information for reports and assist with follow-up tasks.
  • Support parking enforcement and campus navigation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Location/Working Conditions

  • Typically works 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Alternative work schedule as a regular part of the job (on-call, shifts, evenings, and weekends).
  • Requires extensive safety training.
  • Requires protective devices.
  • Response Officers perform duties in the established uniform, primarily on foot.
  • Officers assigned to the Bike Patrol or other special duties may be provided with a bicycle or motor vehicle.

Physical Effort

  • Typically standing or walking.
  • Typically running or climbing.
  • Typically, bending, crouching, and stooping.
  • Occasional lifting (25 - 50 lbs.).

  • Operate a motor vehicle
  • Office equipment.

Required Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.

Certifications/Professional Licenses:

St. Louis Metropolitan Security License - St. Louis City/St. Louis County, St. Louis Metropolitan Security License - within 30 days of hire - St. Louis City/St. Louis County

Work Experience:

Officer In An Academic Or Other Professional Environment (1 Year)

Skills:

Not Applicable

Driver's License:

A Class E (MO) or Class D (IL) license and a good driving record are required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Medical School or Medical Facility Environment – 2 Years.
  • Officers with their EMT-B certification or wishing to obtain their EMT-B certification are encouraged to apply.

Education:

Bachelor's degree - Criminal Justice

Certifications/Professional Licenses:

Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) - CIT International, Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) - Missouri Division of Professional Registration

Work Experience:

Security Officer In A Professional Security Organization (2 Years)

Salary Range

$17.87 - $27.06 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
