Retrofitting Against Progressive Collapse of Structures

About the Project

Progressive collapse occurs when the failure of a primary structural element causes a significant portion or the entire structure to collapse. This can occur due to accidents such as explosions, impacts, design errors, or deterioration over time. Retrofitting techniques help prevent such failures in existing buildings by improving structural strength, redundancy, and energy absorption.

This project examines the phenomenon of progressive collapse and develops methods to strengthen structures through retrofitting. A building model is analysed for possible column loss using structural analysis software. Based on the identified issues, suitable retrofitting methods—such as steel jacketing, fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) wrapping, and concrete encasement—are applied, and their effectiveness is compared.

The results show how retrofitting improves load distribution, ductility, and overall stability. This project supports safer and stronger infrastructure by providing engineers with practical methods to mitigate the risk of progressive collapse in existing buildings.

The investigations for this project can be conducted through various methods, including experimental, numerical (computer simulations), or analytical approaches. Candidates are free to choose their preferred investigation method. Currently, the supervisory team has expertise in concrete and timber structures. If candidates wish to explore other types of structures, they should discuss this with the supervisory team beforehand to narrow down the topic to specific areas. Additionally, AI tools can be used as part of the investigation process.
