In 1971, Yale University established Yale Health to provide health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, is where our members receive most of their care from our 150+ providers. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy.
The Student Health Nurse assumes responsibility for triage, assessment, care-coordination, follow up and transitional care, clinical evaluation and clinical decision making for the assigned population and unit. Assumes responsibility for prioritization of care and disposition of patients from both telephonic encounters as well as scheduled and unscheduled encounters. Compliance with nursing principles, medication safety and adherence to scope of practice is a fundamental expectation. The Clinical Nurse utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation while caring for our patients maintaining confidentiality and dignity. The Clinical Nurse provides safe, effective evidenced based care tailored to the individual needs of the patient and family. As a core member of the care delivery team, the Clinical Nurse partners with the team to facilitate the coordination of patient care at the unit level utilizing the principles of patient/family centered care. Ensures clinical policies and procedures are consistently followed, initiates new policy when appropriate. Role includes initiatives and services that support organizational and strategic goals. RN role serves to support clinicians and all members of the care team to prioritize and anticipate patient care needs. Fosters ongoing improvements of service and a culture that prioritizes safety. Role requires the ability to interface with key clinical partners, ability to make difficult decisions and facilitate resolution.
Schedule
Fulltime, Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00pm. Provide cross-coverage for Athletic Medicine, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30. Early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays/recess may be required.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Previous nursing expertise with demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize using the nursing process in a high volume out-patient environment. Competent clinical triage skills and critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrated evidence of maintenance of professional skill and competency, attendance at educational programs such as seminars and workshops that are appropriate to the field. Demonstrated active membership in professional organizations.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service and the ability to develop positive working relationships. Computer proficiency as it relates to the use of an EMR.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated Nursing experience with at least two years in an In-patient hospital unit in the specialty that is appropriate to the position or experience in an ambulatory care, critical care, SICU, PICU, primary care (sub-acute facility) or a college health center. Proficiency in Epic.
Physical Requirements
May require prolonged standing, walking, use of sight, hearing and touch, moving/lifting patients of varying weights. Requires keyboard use and ability to sit in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
Principal Responsibilities
- The clinical nurse uses the nursing process to deliver high quality comprehensive and individualized care to members of Yale Health.
- Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team to support the work of the team, unit activities, and the accomplishment of positive patient outcomes.
- Delegates responsibilities to appropriate members of the care delivery team based upon an understanding of others' roles, scope of practice, knowledge, and capabilities to ensure optimal utilization of personnel.

- Successfully completes the competency based orientation within designated time frame.

- Delivers excellence in patient care through compliance with all patient safety and regulatory initiatives.
- Communicates in a calm professional manner with patients, families, colleagues, members of the care team, and other hospital personnel, accepts and elicits feedback, and works toward resolving problems and clarifying issues and concerns.
- Uses resources in a fiscally sound manner.
- Compliance with University, State and federal healthcare regulations.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
Licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Connecticut.
