Muskegon Community College is a center for lifelong learning that helps people attain their educational goals by offering programs that respond to individual, community, and global needs. MCC is an associate degree-granting institution of higher education and an applied technology leader for high-tech, hands-on training.
With nearly a 100-year history of academic excellence, MCC is a public community college accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. With robust student success support, free tutoring, 18 athletic teams, events, clubs, and activities, MCC has an annual, full-time equated student enrollment of approximately 2,300 and an unduplicated headcount of 5,100.
Most recently, Muskegon Community College outranked all other colleges in Michigan for the rate of students who received federal financial aid and then transferred to continue their education at a four-year institution. The college’s transfer-out rate was the highest in Michigan, 7 percentage points above the state average, and outpaced the average transfer rate across the nation. MCC is nationally recognized for its liberal arts and occupational programs.
The College has an annual operating budget (general fund) of $44 million and employs about 210 regular full and part-time staff and many adjunct faculty and student assistants. The College also offers 56 Associate degree programs and 29 certificate programs.
The main campus is located on a 111-acre campus in Muskegon which includes the Hendrik Meijer Library & Information Technology Center, Bartels-Rode Gymnasium, Frauenthal Foundation Fine Arts Center (including the Overbrook Theater and Art Gallery), Stevenson Center for Higher Education, the Science Center, the Health and Wellness Center, and the Art & Music Center.
Muskegon Community College also operates the Sturrus Technology Center and Fab Lab in downtown Muskegon and extension centers in Ottawa and Newaygo Counties.
Living in Muskegon County Muskegon County residents enjoy 26 miles of sugar-sand beaches along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, as well as one of America’s only luge tracks at the Winter Sports Complex and the regionally popular Michigan’s Adventure Amusement & Water Park. An outdoor recreation hub with three state parks and swimming, fishing and boating on its many lakes and rivers, the Muskegon area offers dynamic downtown and beachfront restaurant and entertainment venues. The Muskegon Farmer’s Market is the second largest in Michigan. Cruise ships dock in Muskegon, while a high-speed ferry connects the city to Milwaukee. Notable local museums range from rare art collections to an actual World War II submarine and a U.S. Navy ship used during D-Day.
General Description:
This position is responsible for overseeing all operational aspects of campus safety and security, working closely with the others across campus including compliance and the Crisis Prevention Team to address emergency preparedness and response efforts for the College. This person will also act as liaison to MCC’s contracted security firm.
Status: Full-Time 40 hours/52 weeks
Salary Range: Up to $75,000 depending on experience

Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred with background in law enforcement, military safety, with working knowledge/experience of current policies, procedures, and strategies of public safety and security especially in higher educational setting.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and interact/communicate effectively and appropriately with external and internal customers including the MCC leadership, faculty, staff, students, members of the public, and external partners.
- Previous management experience and tested knowledge of supervisory, scheduling, and coaching/development principles including planning and leadership.
- Ability to train staff, teams and groups as needed.
- Utilize technology within the department, to include, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Excel, Word and Access as well as Outlook, searches and AI, etc.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Ability to handle multiple deadlines and urgent or emergency situations simultaneously.
- Knowledge, Skills, of the occupational safety and health standards of general industry knowledge of building codes, ADA codes, life safety codes, and fire codes.
- CPR/AED and first aid certified.
- Working knowledge of Rave Mobile or similar emergency systems preferred.
- Ability to develop, interpret, and write technical/educational specifications, instructions, and policies.
- Demonstrated excellence in both oral and written communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Compose and write correspondence, forms, and memos.
- Have strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting.
- Mentally analyze a situation, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure in area of responsibility.
- Demonstrated use of tact, judgement and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

- Responsible for being on-call, working odd shifts, possible weekends, and holidays.
Essential Function:
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthful environment for staff, faculty, students, and visitors.
- Lead and support the campus security team, overseeing daily operations including building opening/closing, scheduling, and ensuring uninterrupted coverage 24/7/365, including security coverage for on/off campus events.
- Oversee the ALICE program, providing active threat training and preparedness across campus.
- Participate in the CARE and Title IX team as needed, supporting student well-being and safety in partnership with other college teams/leadership.
- Work closely with others on campus in planning for the well-being of students and in responding to security-related incidents as these occur.
- Manage all aspects of campus access, including key control, lock systems, and key card programming, ensuring secure and efficient access to facilities.
- Manage the security, camera, AED, first aid kits, and fire safety monitoring systems across main and off-site campuses including inspections and emergency equipment readiness.
- Maintain open lines of communication with college leadership and law enforcement agencies to address shared concerns and enhance campus safety including to maintain or initiate MOUs when appropriate.
- Support the development and refinement of safety and security protocols, recommending improvements based on incident tracking, analysis, investigation and assessment.
- Conduct safety inspections, surveys, and incident investigations; maintain compliance records and reports; and assist the department with environmental surveys and hazard mitigation efforts, including mold, lead, and asbestos
- Lead training programs on occupational health including but not limited to chemical safety, PPE, confined space entry, ladder safety, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
- Ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, ADA, and other regulatory requirements
- Administer all applicable security policies and procedures, ensuring College compliance with all federal, state, and local requirements and reporting procedures.
- Safeguard confidential information related to campus security.
- Serves and leads teams as needed including but not limited to co-chairing the Crisis Prevention Team and works closely with the Chief Compliance and Title IX Officer ensuring a unified response to safety and crisis situations.
- Ensure training for and completion of incident reports, tracking, analysis, and assessment for mitigation/correction.
- Assist with programs related to hazardous waste, refrigerant recovery, asbestos abatement, air and water quality.
- Communicate with college leadership and law enforcement agencies as required to address matters of mutual concern.
- Work closely with the department in planning for the security of campus buildings ensuring that all safety and security concerns are immediately addressed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
