Scope of Job:
The School of Art and Design at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is seeking a non-tenure track Lecturer I in Art History. The candidate will be responsible for teaching 4 courses each semester, including introductory and advanced undergraduate classes that cater to majors, minors, and students in the visual and fine arts on the Brownsville campus. UTRGV is the second-largest Hispanic-serving institution in the United States, and Latin American art history courses are very popular in the School of Art & Design. A candidate working in the field of Ancient American, Early Modern/Modern, and Contemporary Latin American Art History would have the opportunity to teach and mentor an outstanding community of students in this border region. One of the strengths of the School of Art & Design is its rapid growth in visual communication, design, and photography programs. This 3-year appointment will begin on September 1, 2026.

Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to dynamic and innovative undergraduate teaching and support activities that encourage unique learning opportunities in the university art gallery as well as the classroom. Additional responsibilities include maintaining an active program of scholarly research and supporting student mentorship and professional development.The UTRGV School of Art has 1000 majors and 33 graduate students enrolled in the areas of foundation, painting, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, printmaking, graphic design, art history, and art education. The department comprises 10 tenured faculty members, 8 tenure-track faculty members, and 19 lecturers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Art History or related field from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in art history.
  • A demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serve and mentor diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in studio art and art history discussions.
  • A commitment to quality, student-centered education, working as a team member, and a demonstrated and ongoing commitment to serving diverse student populations is necessary.
  • Actively participate in departmental, college, and university service and leadership, including committee work and providing academic mentoring to students to support their writing skills, portfolio reviews, open studios, and recruitment activities.

  • Ph.D. in Art History or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • A record of one or more years of successful university teaching experience in art history is preferred.
