CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR A RESEARCH GRANT
Scientific Initiation Grant; 1 vacancy

A call is now open for the award of one (1) Scientific Initiation Grant (SIG) under the R&D project "UpFlow – Design and Engineering of Fashion Trousers with a Massage System for the Prevention of Chronic Venous Disease (CVD)", Reference NORTE2030-FEDER-01475800, funded by the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N) under Portugal 2030, NORTE2030 – Northern Regional Operational Programme, under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Medicine.
Eligible Applicants: Students enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme in Medicine.
Grant Eligibility Requirement:
- Applicants may submit their application without providing official proof of enrolment in the degree programme for which the grant is intended. Proof of enrolment in a degree-awarding programme will be required at the time of the grant contract signature.
Applicant Profile:
The following are eligible to apply:
- Portuguese nationals or nationals of other European Union Member States;
- Nationals of third countries;
- Stateless persons;
- Individuals holding political refugee status.
Admission Requirements:
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree programme in Medicine;
- Not have benefited from a non-degree research grant for a cumulative period of two consecutive or non-consecutive years;
- Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:
- Availability to participate in pre-clinical evaluation studies of the prototypes developed in the Central and Southern regions of Portugal;
- Ability to prepare technical reports with critical analysis of the results obtained;
- Good oral and written communication skills in English;
- Ability to collaborate in the preparation of scientific publications.
Application Requirements:
Applications must include the following documents, under penalty of exclusion from the selection process:

- Proof of enrolment or, where applicable, a declaration of honour stating that the applicant is enrolled in the undergraduate degree programme required by this call by the end of the application period.
Eligibility:
Applicants must meet the eligibility conditions established in Article 9 of the FCT Research Grant Regulation (2019).
Work Plan and Objectives:
The selected grant holder will join the research team of the project "UpFlow – Design of Fashion Trousers with a Compression System for the Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Venous Disease (CVD)." The project aims to develop fashion trouser prototypes incorporating compression technology for the prevention and treatment of the symptoms of early-stage Chronic Venous Disease (CVD).
Tasks:
- Collaborate with the project researchers in activities related to:
- (i) research on functionalised fibre structures for active protection;
- (ii) development of functionalisation systems for the garment collection and definition of prototype validation variables;
- (iii) research on the functionalisation of fibres used in the compression structure;
- (iv) evaluation of the bioactive performance of functionalised textiles;
- (v) support for the implementation of functionalisation processes for compression textiles;
- (vi) patent search activities;
- (vii) participation in focus group pre-clinical performance studies;
- (viii) analysis of prototype validation results;
- (ix) organisation of the observational pre-clinical study and preparation of datasets for participants;
- (x) monitoring of the observational pre-clinical study.
- Contribute to project dissemination and valorisation activities, namely:
- preparation of newsletters and content for social media and the project website;
- participation in promotional activities aimed at the target sector;
- support in the development of the project website;
- support in the preparation of patent applications.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical reports describing the main results achieved during the activities carried out throughout the grant period.
Applicable Legislation and Regulations:
This grant is governed by the Research Fellow Statute (Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação – EBI), approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, as amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of 28 August; the University of Minho Research Grant Regulations, published in the Portuguese Official Gazette (Diário da República), Series II, No. 119, Order No. 6524/2020 of 22 June 2020, as amended by Rectification Declaration No. 447/2021 of 22 June 2021; and the FCT Research Grant Regulation, Regulation No. 950/2019 of 16 December 2019, currently in force.
Host Institution and Scientific Supervision:
The work plan will be carried out at the Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T), School of Engineering, University of Minho, located at the Azurém Campus, under the scientific supervision of Dr Helena Prado Felgueiras.
Grant Duration:
The grant will have a duration of six (6) months, with an expected starting date in October 2026.
The grant may be renewed, if necessary, up to the maximum period permitted by the project and/or the applicable legislation.
Monthly Maintenance Allowance:
The monthly maintenance allowance (MMA) is €701.12, in accordance with the FCT grant table applicable in Portugal (Annex I – Monthly Maintenance Allowance Table of the FCT Research Grant Regulations) and Annex II of the University of Minho Research Grant Regulations, published in the Portuguese Official Gazette (Diário da República), Series II, No. 119, Order No. 6524/2020 of 22 June 2020, as amended by Rectification Declaration No. 447/2021 of 22 June 2021, in accordance with the applicable regulations.
The grant will be paid by bank transfer to the grant holder's bank account indicated during the contracting process, no later than the 23rd day of each month.
Exclusivity Regime:
Research grant holders shall perform their duties under an exclusivity regime, in accordance with Article 5 of the Research Fellow Statute and the applicable Research Grant Regulations.

Should the Chair be unable to perform his/her duties, he/she shall be replaced by the First Effective Member, who shall in turn be replaced by the First Alternate Member.
Evaluation and Selection Criteria:
Applications will be assessed based on the Candidate's Merit (CM), according to the following criteria, each scored on a scale from 0 to 5:
Candidate's Merit (CM) – 100%
a) Academic record (reflecting the grades obtained in the curricular units of the undergraduate degree required under this Call) – 50%;
b) Personal curriculum (reflecting the applicant's scientific and professional background) – 40%;
c) Motivation letter – 10%.
The final Candidate's Merit score will be calculated using the following formula:
CM = (a × 0.5) + (b × 0.4) + (c × 0.1)
Publication of Results:
The draft evaluation results, supported by the Selection Panel minutes, will be communicated to all applicants by e-mail, in accordance with Article 12 of the FCT Research Grant Regulation (RBI) (FCT-funded grants) or Article 13 of the University of Minho Research Grant Regulation (RBIC) (other funding schemes subject to the University of Minho Regulations).
If the proposed decision is unfavourable to the award of the grant, applicants shall have 10 working days to submit their comments during the prior hearing of interested parties, pursuant to Articles 121 and 122 of the Portuguese Code of Administrative Procedure (Decree-Law No. 4/2015 of 7 January).
Complaint and Appeal Procedures:
The final evaluation results will be published in an ordered list (alphabetically, according to the final score obtained), displayed in a visible and public place at the host institution and communicated by e-mail to all applicants, together with the minutes of the Selection Panel meetings.
The selected applicant must confirm, in writing, acceptance of the grant. If the selected applicant declines the grant, it will be offered to the next applicant according to the final ranking.
Complaints against the final decision may be submitted to the Chair of the Selection Panel within 15 working days. Applicants may also lodge an optional hierarchical appeal, pursuant to Article 15(2) of the University of Minho Research Grant Regulation (RBIC), addressed to the Vice-Rector holding delegated authority for this area.
Reserve List:
Applicants ranked below the selected candidate will be included in a reserve list, which may be used until 31 December 2026.
Application Deadline and Submission Procedure:
The call will remain open for 10 working days, counted from the date of publication of the announcement.
Applications must be submitted by e-mail and must include the following documents:

- Degree certificate or a declaration of honour undertaking to submit the certificate at the time of contracting;
- Motivation letter;
- Declaration confirming compliance with the eligibility requirements for the grant;
- Any other documents considered relevant for the evaluation process.

Applications submitted by any other means will not be accepted.
Grant Contract:
The grant will be formalised through the signing of a contract between the University of Minho and the grant holder, in accordance with the model contract set out in Annex IV of the University of Minho Research Grant Regulations (Order No. 6524/2020 of 22 June 2020, as amended by Rectification Declaration No. 447/2021 of 22 June 2021), updated in accordance with Section 2.4 of the Guidelines for the Award and Management of Grants under R&D Projects, including Infrastructure Projects, the Multiannual Funding Programme for R&D Units, and Other FCT Funding Instruments (2021 Version).
The grant agreement may only be signed after receipt of all documentation required for the specific type of grant, which must be submitted within a maximum period of two months, including proof of academic qualifications and proof of enrolment in the relevant degree programme or non-degree course, where applicable.
After receiving all the required documentation, the contracting entity has 60 working days to sign the grant agreement (for grants governed by the University of Minho Research Grant Regulations, this period is 15 working days, pursuant to Article 15(2)).
Upon receipt of the contract, the grant holder must sign and return it within 15 working days.
The grant may only commence after formal authorisation has been issued by the contracting entity.
Termination and Cancellation of the Grant:
Without prejudice to the other grounds for termination provided for in the applicable FCT and University of Minho Research Grant Regulations and in the Research Fellow Statute, the grant shall terminate upon completion of the agreed work plan or at the end of the period for which it was awarded or renewed.
At the end of the grant period, the grant holder must submit a Final Report describing the work carried out, in accordance with the objectives and evaluation criteria established by the scientific supervisor, within 30 days of the end of the grant.
The Final Report must be prepared in accordance with Annex I of the University of Minho Research Grant Regulations (Order No. 6524/2020 of 22 June 2020, as amended by Rectification Declaration No. 447/2021 of 22 June 2021).
