Senior Academic Skills Advisor

About the Role

The Senior Academic Skills Adviser is part of the team that makes up the Academic Skills Centre within Library Services. Working alongside specialists in information literacy, transition to and through university, and peer support, you will be contributing to our developing academic literacies offer to help all students at Queen Mary fulfil their potential. The postholder will deliver embedded and standalone workshops, provide support via 121s and drop-ins, and develop online self-study resources across a range of topics, including academic writing, research skills, presentations, academic integrity and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

We work on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of two days per week on campus.

About You

You will have experience of working with a range of students and academic staff to support the development academic literacies. You will have a current awareness of the challenges facing diverse student populations in adapting to and thriving at university and a commitment to and enthusiasm for supporting all students to develop their academic literacies. You will have relevant teaching or training experience, preferably from working in higher education.

About the Department

Library Services has 65 staff supporting with libraries and study spaces across three sites, hosts the university archives, and has a strong online presence. Library Learning Support and Engagement (LLSE) delivers the Academic Skills Centre provision to support the academic literacies development of all students. The team delivers a core programme of resources and training (workshops and individual advice) and also works in collaboration with academic schools and institutes to develop and deliver more discipline-specific guidance. The range of activities includes: guidance academic writing, maths and statistics, information literacy, understanding issues relating to academic integrity and artificial intelligence, and adapting to the requirements of different modes and levels of study at university, all with the central aim of helping all students reach their full potential.
