Job Summary:
The Senior Accountant will provide expert-level support to the Gates Institute, including accounting, financial tracking, and post-award administration. This position will be responsible for providing administrative, financial, technical guidance and support to faculty, fellows and staff seeking outside funding for research, public service, and special sponsored institutional projects.
The Senior Accountant is responsible for the full cycle of accounting and financial operations to support a business unit of the Gates Institute. This includes account reconciliations, journal entries, payroll expense transfers, expense report approvals, and monitoring of AP/AR activity in PeopleSoft. The role oversees and provides guidance on departmental budgets and funding distributions, communicates over-expenditures, and partners with leadership on forecasts, fiscal analyses, and special projects that support strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and track departmental budgets and funding distributions; provide recommendations.
- Act as a key partner in all fiscal and operational reporting needs and projects.
- Serve as a lead reviewer for business unit reconciliations prepared by other team members.
- Performs Payroll Expense Transfers (PETs) and Journal Entries (JEs) as needed in compliance with internal and external policies and procedures.
- Prepare and process deposits for large checks and electronic payments, verifying accuracy and coding to the correct speedtypes and accounts.
- Review and approval, travels (Concur), and capital expenditure (unless this falls into something above).
- Act as a post-award grant administrator and subject matter expert for the business unit.
- Work with the PIs and the OGC to coordinate the receipt of funded proposals including:
- Review notices of grant awards with the PI, making note of any special restrictions.
- Respond to requests from funders for information/clarification needed for funding decisions including preparation of other support documentation for grant personnel and budget revision and justification.
- Work with the Office of Grants and Contracts (OGC) in order to identify cost-sharing in proposals and assure accurate accounting.
Work Location:
Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
- 4 years of experience working with finances, grants/contracts, budget management, and/or procurement.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A master's degree in business administration, business, finance, accounting, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
- Direct experience with pre- and post-award administration.
- Experience working in an academic medical center.
- Previous experience with University of Colorado, Finance, payroll, A2E and procurement systems.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
- Outstanding customer service skills.
- Knowledge of, and ability to apply, diversified financial management principles, tools, and techniques.
- Ability to evaluate, analyze, and interpret vast amounts of data, recommend solutions, and implement preferred courses of action.
- Ability to communicate with various constituencies to engender trust and credibility at all levels of the organization and work effectively in a complex and political environment.
- Ability to tolerate a high degree of ambiguity, yet work effectively to fulfill the missions, goals, and objectives of the Gates Institute.
- Knowledge of and experience working with financial record keeping and accounting systems (e.g., PeopleSoft Finance System or similar software). Candidate will process PETs and JEs and support with appropriate financial reports.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $64,336 - $81,836.
