About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Metabolic Research Unit - a dedicated nutritional research facility for studies involving participants - within the Department of Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London.

The post is suitable for an experienced, organised, and highly motivated research nurse, paramedic (or related healthcare professional) to provide support to a dynamic research department as a Senior Clinical Operations Officer.

The applicant will be a State Registered Nurse, paramedic, or closely related healthcare professional with phlebotomy skills, including cannulation experience, and personal indemnity cover. They will be required to support research studies investigating the role of nutrition (e.g., diet, foods, supplements) in the prevention and management of chronic disease and/or promotion of health. Strong all round communication skills and flexibility are essential.

The post holder will be based at the Waterloo campus of King’s College London and will report to the Academic Lead for the Metabolic Research Unit (Prof Wendy Hall) and the Departmental Technical Manager (Mario Mazzantini).

The post-holder will have:

• An active registration with NMC/HCPC and recent practice experience
• Skill and recent experience in cannulation and venepuncture
• Very strong communication and organisational skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team
• An interest in learning clinical research processes and techniques such as ultrasound and processing blood samples
• Flexibility to start work earlier when required (07:00/08:00 h)
• Previous experience in research is desirable

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day clinical research, teaching & training, financial, operational and administrative functions of the Metabolic Research Unit, including venous cannulation and phlebotomy, co-ordinating the sharing of resources amongst users, first aid, ensuring Good Clinical Practice and adherence to health and safety regulations, and conducting additional research duties associated with running human nutrition studies. They will be responsible for ensuring all trial standard operating protocols are adhered to on clinical nutrition study days. They will liaise with the academic and research staff and will provide health and safety, first aid and phlebotomy training to new research students and research assistants.

In addition, the post holder will be responsible for ensuring that facility/salary costs are appropriately charged to research grants and consultancy projects on a monthly basis, as well as managing all other financial aspects of the Metabolic Research Unit (including providing quotations, invoicing, and financial reporting).

The post holder will work closely with other members of the Department’s Research team to provide administrative and clinical support for the group, including developing a recruitment database of clinical trial participants, and managing a shared mailbox and calendar for enquiries.

This is a part time role (21 hours per week) and you will be offered a fixed-term contract for 12 months. The preferred working days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday, with an ideal distribution of hours across four mornings.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. Registered Nurse, paramedic or closely related healthcare professional with active registration with the NMC or HCPC, and recent practice experience
2. Personal medical indemnity insurance
3. Highly proficient in venepuncture and cannulation
4. Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks, maintain attention to detail, and work punctually and reliably
5. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and influence effectively at all levels
6. Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel), and experience using administrative databases and management information systems
7. Flexibility to work outside core hours, e.g., start work earlier when required (07:00/08:00 h)
8. Strong data management and document control skills, including maintaining both electronic and hard copy records

Desirable criteria

1. Experience of financial planning, including budget preparation and monitoring
2. Experience of working in a higher education institution or research environment

Grade and Salary: £39,076 - £43,909 pro rata per annum, including London Weighting Allowance
