This position performs its duties primarily on the Kentfield Campus with occasional travel to the IVC Campus in Novato, so if not already residing within the Bay Area, the successful candidate must be willing to relocate.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under general supervision from the Director of Marketing and Communications, the job of Senior Creative Designer/Lead Web Designer is responsible for assisting the director with the conceptualization and design of all visual, print and website communications solutions for the College of Marin, from concept to completion: upholding consistent branding and evolving the visual guidelines for the College; strategic planning and orchestration of the development, content, design, and production of all College of Marin collateral, including printed material, advertising, signage, electronic presentations, memorabilia, other media; and ensuring the accurate and professional design, development, functionality, and maintenance of a high quality, current, and user friendly website.

Essential Functions

  • Develop overall print publications and web strategy, which identifies categories for types of publications, quality, design style and calendar for publishing in conjunction with the Director of Marketing and Communications. Apply and evolve internal and external communications strategy for printed and web material to build brand recognition.
  • Establish base content to streamline the coordination, conceptual and production processes. Apply principles of theory, typography, color, and information hierarchy in communications design.
  • Support the creation and implementation of secondary identity elements and a set of comprehensive rules surrounding their application to all communications, including use of color, graphics, typography, imagery, stock size and logo usage. Develop and support the use of consistent visual expression/design treatment for each product brand, which in turn is consistently endorsed by the College identity. Adopt standard naming protocol for all types of publications and documents and assist with organizing an archive system for design and print electronic files.
  • Coordinate the workflow of the Graphic Design Specialists to support their work with clients throughout the creative, design and production process, suggest and create design solutions. Ensure constructive, effective working relationships between the creative team and marketing partners. Serve as final creative authority, with Director, on creative team to maintain College branding and identity, endorsed and required design elements, information and appropriate language and other requirements to maintain consistent communications.
  • Plans, develops, designs, and prepares College web pages and portal, works collaboratively with IT using appropriate software and tools. Coordinates web development, design, and maintenance of the District website for currency and cohesion. Serves as the primary point of contact for creating and maintaining web pages and best practices for COM. Ensures the alignment, overall functionality and presentation of District website. Ensure cohesive and appropriate graphics, COM identity, and web standards. Ensure compliance and adherence to COM web guidelines.
  • Create standard templates and/or web graphics for various departments and services. Consults with and trains faculty and staff on best practices for the web, the use of appropriate software to update and maintain COM websites.
  • Works with various COM departments, programs, services, and committees regarding the design of specialized websites and the application of identity standards and functionality requirements.
  • Establish and implement documented procedures, product cycles and approval process for website. Establish standards for production tools, including hardware, software, templates, version control and database integration. Provide consultation on web content development. Make recommendations regarding approach and tactics for web projects.
  • Implement and manage web projects timeline and workflow. Troubleshoot web requests and issues; monitor progress and provides feedback on site construction and presentation of sites.
  • Serves as a resource to ensure that web-based accessibility standards are met (federal, state, and District)
  • Monitors adherence to web, identity, graphic, and editorial standards on District sites for quality control; serves as primary contact person to provide guidance for compliance to COM web design standards and guidelines. Monitors and reviews and approves web pages, ensuring they are aligned with the overall ‘look and feel' of the District web. Updates web pages as needed.
  • Establish and monitors a photo library to enhance the profile and positioning of the facilities, departments and divisions within the College. Hands-on responsibility for all publication photography, including the direction of campus photographers, the art direction of photo shoots, and the responsibility to direct the sizing, cropping and retouching of photographs for reproduction. Manage vendor relationships, including photographers, illustrators, videographers, and provide art direction on outside projects. Works to secure cost estimates as a basis for selecting appropriate service bureaus, photographers, illustrators, artists, and other vendors.
  • Incorporates promotional efforts into social networking site, such as FaceBook and other promotional avenues.

Requirements & Desirables

REQUIREMENTS

1. Bachelor's Degree in visual communications, graphic design, art design; and
2. Four (4) years of experience in the coordination and production of publications, including directing the work of others in the field,

OR

1. Associate's Degree in visual communications, graphic design or art design; and
2. Six (6) years of experience in the coordination and production of publications, including directing the work of others in the field.

(Additional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive experience in website design and development.
  • Strong web project coordination and experience in developing multiple web site.
  • Extensive graphic design experience on a wide variety of promotional and production collateral.
  • Experience in leadership role strongly desired.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE is required to review and interpret highly technical information; write materials and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: Strong design skills (color, design, layout) and knowledge of the publication production process. Experienced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite. Working knowledge of web development languages, such as HTML/CSS. Knowledge of a variety of operating systems, both PC and Mac.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a frequent need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: strong design skills; administering personnel policies and procedures; adhering to safety practices; planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining production schedules, operating standard office equipment, using pertinent software applications. Use of new software or additional equipment brought about by new technology shall be incorporated consistent with the level of responsibility and complexity of this job.

SALARY INFORMATION

FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Grade: CSEA 129
Starting Salary: $47.92 - $52.85 per hour (step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.
