The Senior Disability Specialist is responsible for the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of reasonable accommodations that include academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and services for students with disabilities in accordance with relevant federal regulations and school policies. The Senior Disability Specialist reports to the Director of Disability Services and collaborates with the Office of Student Disability Services staff and other offices, to help promote a vibrant, diverse and inclusive learning environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluate student eligibility for disability services.
- Determine individualized accommodations based on individual student needs and program requirements, in compliance with institutional policies and procedures, as well as applicable law.
- Knowledge and understanding of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA, and other pertinent federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for disabled students.
- Ability to stay current with federal, state, and local laws and best practices related to accessibility, accommodations, and disability services.
- Apply knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques for students with disabilities.
- Conduct interactive interviews with students to determine reasonable accommodations to facilitate equal access without compromising academic standards and conduct follow up meetings as necessary.
- Maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date notes/records related to students.
- Review documentation including, neuro-psych exams, psychological evaluations, medical and other technical documentation, to determine eligibility for services and reasonable accommodations.
- Coordinate academic adjustments/accommodations and support services for medical and graduate students in all program settings including didactic, lab and clinical environments.
- Works as an interdisciplinary team member with program faculty and administrators to ensure required accommodations are efficiently and effectively implemented.
- Make referrals to appropriate community and school services.
- Provide ongoing information and support for prospective and enrolled students.
- Develop and deliver in-person and an on-line training for students in the use of assistive technology and instructional computer technology primarily for Windows and Apple computers.
- Evaluate and review innovative and emerging assistive technology of benefit to students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with other offices and outside agencies, as needed and appropriate.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in disability services, education, social work, educational psychology or related field. Experience working in a diverse and multicultural work environment is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of full-time, professional experience in postsecondary disability resources and accessibility or a combination of relevant training and experience.
- Prior experience reviewing, evaluating, and determining academic accommodations for post-secondary students in health science programs preferred.
- Understanding of assistive technologies and digital accessibility required; demonstrated proficiency in current assistive technologies preferred.
- Ability to provide high quality student service and handle multiple priorities with confidence and poise in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to build relationships quickly and to work effectively with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds, including administrators, faculty and students.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, including active listening, clear speaking, and thoughtful writing.
- Ability to creatively problem-solve and demonstrate adaptability in both independent and team settings.
- Ability to function independently, prioritize, maintain a high level of productivity, and handle confidential matters with discretion.
- Demonstrated proficiency in managing data systems and maintaining accurate records.
- The ability and willingness to work evenings and/or weekends to accommodate the activities related to job responsibilities.
