About the opportunity

The Discipline of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney is advertising a continuing teaching and research position, to be appointed at the level of either Senior Lecturer (Level C) or Associate Professor (Level D). Applicants with expertise in Indigenous Australian politics will be highly regarded, but this is not a requirement.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is driven by academic rigour, intellectual curiosity and social inclusion. The School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Sydney is one of the most highly regarded Schools for social sciences in Australia, focusing on five research themes: health, markets, governance, inequality, and environment. The School is proudly home to one of the most successful academic groups in the world for research and teaching in the social sciences, and their work interprets and makes sense of societies, nation states and people.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • teach into units within the Bachelor of Arts (Politics Major)
  • undertake units within the university’s exciting new Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (BPPE) program, which is taught across three disciplines and two Schools, and may include teaching at the postgraduate units
  • conduct research in area of study, primarily Australian politics. Additional expertise in one or more of the following areas would be considered highly desirable:
    • political theory
    • environmental politics
    • comparative politic
  • mentoring colleagues in earlier stages of their careers, and supervising higher degree by research (HDR) students
  • contributing to educational and research leadership and governance priorities within the Discipline and in SSPS.

About you

We are seeking a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Australian Politics who has:

  • a PhD in Australian politics or a cognate field
  • demonstrated teaching excellence at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
  • demonstrated leadership in educational innovation, curriculum design and review, relative to opportunity
  • the ability to teach core and selective units of study in the Politics undergraduate major within the Bachelor of Arts, as well as units in the Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (BPPE) program
  • a high-quality research agenda in Australian politics and an additional area, ideally including: political theory, environmental politics, and/or comparative politics.

Associate Professor who, in addition to above, has demonstrated capacity to:

  • provide academic service, governance, and engagement activities
  • attract nationally competitive research funding, particularly from the Australian Research Council (Category 1 funding), and/or from governmental/non-government sources (Categories 2 and 3)
  • lead curriculum development that enhances student learning in the discipline curriculum
  • obtain competitive grant funding for their education scholarship
  • leadership within the higher education sector, including demonstrated success in supervising and/or mentoring others (including honours students) to achieve career progression or professional advancement
  • establishing relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of education in the discipline, School, Faculty and University.

The position level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and knowledge as assessed by the selection committee.

Base Salary Level C/D $156,103 p.a. - $207,069 p.a. + 17% superannuation
