The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW; https://www.mlw.mw) and the University of Liverpool seeks a senior mathematical modeller to establish and lead a team of mathematical modellers in the recently formed Data Science and Computational Modelling Unit (DSCMU) at MLW.

MLW have renewed Wellcome core funding for seven years (2025-2032). As part of the current 10-year strategic plan, MLW aim to develop their capacity in data science to support and lead high-impact research in sub-Saharan Africa. MLW has an established team of statisticians, with the former Statistical Support Unit having been restructured into the DSCMU.

You will therefore be expected to have a keenness for interdisciplinary, team-based science to provide strategic leadership in setting up and leading a team of mathematical modellers in the DSCMU. You will lead and deliver world leading research in modelling for health protection data science. You will be required to apply for competitive research grants and publish impactful, peer-reviewed research.

The post is a collaboration between the DSCMU at MLW and the Civic Health Innovation Labs (CHIL), an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Liverpool. You would be a core member of CHIL and the Department of Public Health Policy and Systems at the University of Liverpool.

You should have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area for mathematical modelling with applications to health data science. As an academic member of staff, you will be expected to contribute to teaching. Given the importance of teaching, you will be expected to obtain a teaching qualification through the University, if you do not have one already.

This is a permanent post.
