The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of the Western Cape is internationally recognised for its learning, teaching, and research excellence. The Faculty comprises nine academic departments, a School of Pharmacy and several world-class research institutes and Centres. The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the major scientific disciplines and a professional degree in Pharmacy.

The Department offers degree programmes in Applied Geology and Environmental & Water Sciences and boasts active research groups in water and Applied Geology. Joining the Applied Geology section of the Department, the ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to our research and teaching activities, adding expertise in economic and field geology to complement and extend existing activities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

  • Facilitate leaning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in economic geology and African geology courses, along with introductory geology courses. (This includes both classroom teaching and field excursions.)
  • Conduct research and publish work in geo-energy resources in general.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Provide academic leadership and contribute to administration.
  • Undertake curriculum development and assessment.
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach

Minimum Requirements

For the post of Senior Lecturer, the following minimum requirements shall apply:

  • PhD or equivalent degree in geology related to economic and field geology.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching economic geology and involvement in geological field work.
  • A record of quality peer reviewed publications in high impact journals in geology.
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision at the Masters and/or PhD level.
  • Evidence of initiating community engagement activity integrated with learning and teaching and/or research.

For the post of Lecturer, the following minimum requirements shall apply:

  • MSc degree and registered for a PhD in geology relevant to economic and field geology, with a clear plan for completion.
  • Experience in teaching economic geology.
  • Evidence of relevant high-quality, peer-reviewed research outputs.
  • A record of postgraduate research supervision at Honours level.
  • Evidence of initiating community engagement activity integrated with learning and teaching and/or research.
