Senior Lecturer
The Dickson Poon School of Law is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer to join the School and its core team for the Professional Law Institute (PLI). The PLI is the centre for practice-focussed legal education at the School and is responsible for the design and delivery of an innovative, vocational law programme called the MSc Law and Professional Practice.
About the role
The successful candidate will be responsible, as part of the PLI team, for the design and delivery of innovative, practice-oriented programmes, including the MSc Law and Professional Practice (MSc).
The successful candidate will act as module leader for the role holder’s core module(s) on the MSc and be responsible for the design and setting of all assessments on that module. The role holder will teach and lecture on a variety of modules on the MSc programme and/or the School’s LLB/LLM programmes.
The successful candidate will work with the Director of the PLI and the PLI team to drive the growth of both the PLI and the MSc Programme. They will maintain engagement with law firms, chambers, in-house lawyers and/or other industry stakeholders to promote the MSc programme and will work with the PLI team and the School to market the programme.
The successful candidate will promote the School and PLI through attendance at relevant professional and academic conferences. They will contribute in a significant way to the administration of the MSc programme.
This is a post on the Academic Education Pathway, which emphasises teaching, scholarship and innovation. Successful candidates will have excellent teaching and course design skills, as well as experience working in the legal profession.
The successful candidate will be responsible to the Executive Dean.
This is a full-time post and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
- Qualification as a lawyer in a common law jurisdiction and at least two years’ post-qualification experience as a legal professional.
- Proven experience teaching a legal subject in a higher education institute.
- The ability to design innovative modules for practice-oriented programmes of study in law in a face-to-face environment.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to teach, substantive business law modules (for example, business practice, corporate finance, the law of business organisations).
- Demonstrable relationships with law firms, barristers, in-house lawyers and/or other legal industry stakeholders.
Desirable criteria
- HEA recognition and / or Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice in Higher Education.
- Experience of teaching post qualification lawyers (including executive education).
- Experience as a programme leader or of faculty or university governance.
- Understanding of emerging trends in legal higher education and legal vocational training.
- Demonstration of scholarship through attendance at conferences and/or publications

Grade and Salary: £65,091 - £74,613 per annum, including London Weighting Allowance
