Salary on appointment will be £38,784 per annum, with an annual increment up to £46,049 per annum. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Associate to join the School of Biological Sciences to conduct studies on a BBSRC-funded project, which explores a novel role for amino acids in subverting metal toxicity in pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria.

The research aims to uncover how amino acid metabolism intersects with metal homeostasis and stress responses, revealing new molecular mechanisms that may inform future antimicrobial strategies. You will join a dynamic research group with access to state-of-the-art facilities and collaborative networks across microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.

As a Senior Research Associate you will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments, analysing data, preparing manuscripts, and presenting research findings. The role requires independent initiative and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to achieve the research objectives.

You will have a PhD (or be near completion, within 6 month of appointment) in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field. You will also have skills in genetic manipulation (of bacteria) and/or strong command of molecular biology techniques. Experience working with Gram-positive bacteria would be advantageous.

This full-time post is available from 1 November 2025 on a fixed term basis for up to three years. Further information on our great benefits package, including 44 days annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays and additional University Customary days, can be found on our benefits page.

Closing date: 21 September 2025

The University holds an Athena Swan Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality.
