University of Bristol - Faculty of Health and Life Sciences

Location:Bristol
Salary:£43,482 to £50,253 per annum
Hours:Full Time
Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On:20th February 2026
Closes:5th March 2026
Job Ref:ACAD108474

The role

This post offers an excellent opportunity for a Senior Research Associate to join a multi-disciplinary research team of mathematical modelers, epidemiologists and health economists based in Population Health Sciences in Bristol Medical School. This post is funded by international studies which will use skills in systematic review and meta-analyses, epidemiological data analyses, and health economic modelling to understand the epidemiology and risk factors for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in low- and middle-income countries and guide the prevention and treatment response.

The post is full-time and available until the end of 2026 in the first instance, although it may be extended. The post will provide a valuable opportunity for obtaining research training and experience.

Hybrid working is available - to be agreed, but flexible.

What will you be doing?

The post will involve undertaking meta-analyses of systematic review data, detailed epidemiological analyses of individual-level datasets, and analysing cost, resource use, and quality of life data focussed on evaluating the impact and cost-effectiveness of existing and new interventions addressing the epidemics of, and interventions for, HBV and HCV in different countries. You will also be involved in the technical aspects of developing cost-effectiveness models of HBV and HCV interventions, and undertaking in-depth data analyses to parameterise the models and for standalone papers. You will collaborate with other members of the team involved in these projects. There may also be the opportunity to collaborate on projects which focus on other infections and population groups - including undertaking systematic reviews, epidemiological analyses, mathematical modelling and cost-effectiveness analyses.

You should apply if

We are looking for applicants with experience in systematic reviews and meta-analyses, epidemiological analyses using advanced statistical methods, and model-based economic evaluations of interventions for HBV and/or HCV.

You must have experience of developing, parameterising, and coding up cost-effectiveness models (using Matlab, R or similar), and the ability to design and undertake modelling experiments involving data and uncertainty.

Skills in undertaking statistical analyses of epidemiological datasets are essential (using STATA, R or similar packages).

You will have strong IT and communication skills and work effectively within a team environment that includes non-mathematicians.

It is essential that you have experience of working in population health in lower- and middle-income countries.
