Black Dog Institute

The Black Dog Institute is a Medical Research Institute affiliated with UNSW Sydney, and a global leader in translational mental health research. We are the only medical research institute in Australia that investigates mental health across the lifespan—from childhood to adulthood. This position will work within the Workplace Mental Health Research Program.

The role

This position will conduct independent and collaborative research in Men’s Mental Health and Suicide Prevention to improve understanding of suicide risk, enhance engagement for intervention, and develop evidence-based digital content for men. The position will lead and deliver research projects—including data analysis and modelling—across epidemiological, qualitative, quantitative, and intervention studies, while supporting product rollout, stakeholder collaboration, funding opportunities, and the broader research team. The role reports to a Senior Lecturer at the Black Dog Institute and manages two direct reports.

Key skills and experience required:

  • PhD in psychology, psychiatry, public health or related discipline, and/ or relevant work experience.
  • A track record of significant involvement in mental health or suicide prevention research.
  • Experience leading participant recruitment, ethics submissions, conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, and designing and implementing quantitative and qualitative research projects
  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritise workload, meet strict deadlines and manage projects effectively.
  • Demonstrated experience using statistical packages to analyse data.
  • Experience in student and technical staff supervision or teaching, non-essential but preferred
  • Experience with digital health technologies, implementation, and/or clinical trials, non-essential but preferred
  • A demonstrated capacity to represent the University and the Black Dog Institute effectively in a variety of external settings through networking, partnership building and influencing skills.
