About the Opportunity

We are seeking an accomplished academic to take on a pivotal leadership role in clinical research. As a Senior Research Fellow (Academic Level C) or Associate Professor (Academic Level D), you will help drive the strategic direction of our clinical trials platform, mentor emerging researchers, and contribute to the Institute’s reputation for excellence in research and engagement.
This is an exciting opportunity to:
- Lead and expand clinical trials infrastructure, from early-phase studies to large-scale Phase III trials.
- Publish in high-impact journals and secure competitive external research funding.
- Supervise and inspire higher degree research students.
- Build strong collaborations with industry, government, and community partners.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and innovative work culture.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 5 years based at Western’s Westmead Campus, although travel to other campuses of the University may be required.

Key Responsibilities
At Academic Level C, you will:
- Conduct and lead clinical research aligned with NICM’s strategic priorities.
- Deliver high-quality research outputs and publications.
- Develop competitive research funding proposals and manage projects end-to-end.
- Supervise research staff and higher degree students.
- Contribute to teaching and mentoring within your field of expertise.
- Support the Institute’s strategic and administrative functions.
At Academic Level D, in addition to the above you will:
- Provide strategic leadership in clinical trials development and implementation.
- Secure major research funding, including Category 1 and 3 grants.
- Expand NICM’s clinical trials platform and research profile nationally and internationally.
- Lead governance roles and external engagement with industry and professional bodies.
- Influence research policy and contribute to curriculum development.
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking an accomplished researcher with a strong foundation in medicine or a related discipline. You will bring:
- A PhD in Medicine or a closely related field, underpinned by a proven record of scholarly achievement.
- Extensive experience managing clinical trials from protocol to completion, on time and within budget.
- A strong track record of funded research, high-impact publications, citations, and global collaborations.
- Demonstrated success in guiding HDR candidates and early-career researchers.
- The ability to build partnerships across sectors to drive innovation and engagement.
- Outstanding written, oral, and interpersonal skills fostering teamwork and positive culture.

Remuneration Package:
The level of appointment will be determined by the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications, with remuneration aligned to the corresponding academic level.
- Academic Level C $173,950 to $199,541 p.a. (comprising Salary of $147,138 to $169,011 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading).
- Academic Level D $208,064 to $228,525 p.a. (comprising Salary of $176,296 to $193,784 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading.
