Senior Research Scientist (PREP0004703)
Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.
Salary: $115,500-$115,500 a year
Johns Hopkins University: Whiting School of Engineering: Office of Research and Translation
Description
PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to be recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from a wide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research across various fields. Individuals in this position will perform technical work supporting the collaboration's scientific research.
Research Title: Data Scientist / Computer Scientist – Large Scale Network Measurement and Modeling
The work will entail:
NIST seeks an experienced researcher to design and develop large-scale network measurement and modeling systems to support NIST research programs focused on the design and standardization of technologies to improve the security and resilience of critical network infrastructures. The successful candidate is expected to develop, test and deploy data acquisition, and analysis systems that can measure and monitor the correctness and completeness of emerging trust infrastructures, and security protocols in the global Internet. The candidate is expected to develop custom analytics, visualizations and research reports to address an evolving set of questions about the scalability and efficacy of technologies proposed for standardization. Where measurements of actual early deployments are not available, the candidate is expected to develop simulations / emulations of large-scale deployments in realistic network environments. The candidate is expected convey the results of their work as an author of research publications, standards contributions and presentations to the networking industry, standards development organizations and the research communities.
U.S. Citizen Preferred
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Develop measurement, data acquisition, and analysis systems to characterize the completeness and correctness of the early deployments of new security and resilience technologies for the Internet’s global routing system.
- Develop custom modeling and analytics to characterize the scalability and efficacy of emerging standards to mitigate hijacks, route leaks and source address spoofing in the Internet’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP).
- Develop large-scale simulations / emulations of early designs of routing security and resilience mechanisms for non-terrestrial networks (NTNs).
- Author high quality research reports, standards contributions and presentations to Industry and Government collaborators.
- Ensure that analysis reports, software, and documentation developed are publicly disseminated through proper NIST processes.
Qualifications
A PhD in data science, computer science, or closely related field.
- 3 years of relevant experience in the design and development of measurement, modeling and analysis systems for global Internet technologies.
- 3 years of relevant experience with modern data engineering technologies to enable continuous acquisition, storage and analysis of large-scale data sets.
- 3 years of relevant experience in the development of analysis and visualization tools for large-scale data sets.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Additional Desirable Skills, Expertise and Qualifications:
- US citizenship preferred.
- Experience in authoring research publications, presentations and standards contributions documenting results of large-scale network measurement, modeling and analysis research.
Employment Terms:
- This opportunity is to be an associate researcher in the NIST Wireless Networks Division, located in Gaithersburg, MD. Funds to support relocation are not available.
- Associate researchers are NOT federal employees, but they work closely with NIST researchers.
- Salary commensurate with experience; not to exceed $115,500/year.
