Senior Vice President and Dean - School of Health Professions
The chief administrative and academic officer of the School of Health Professions at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is responsible for strategic, research, academic, clinical, and business affairs. This role involves faculty and staff recruitment, shared governance, research productivity, student enrollment, programmatic development, and collaborations with other schools and the community.
Essential Job Functions:
- Provide strategic oversight and expertise for all aspects of the School, including representation within UTMB and beyond.
- Lead strategic planning and implementation for education, research, clinical practice, and professional service.
- Recruit and appoint senior staff, Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Program Directors, and Departmental Chairs.
- Develop best practices to achieve national reputation and rankings.
- Participate in institutional meetings and lead with integrity and transparency.
- Expand scholarship, teaching, and clinical programs, building on strengths and fostering new excellence.
- Develop collaborative relationships with other schools and advocate for faculty, staff, and students.
- Support university-wide efforts, maintain financial health, and ensure accreditation compliance.
- Secure extramural and philanthropic resources for growth.
- Foster relationships with alumni and professional organizations.
- Manage student recruitment, retention, and success programs.
- Engage in professional activities at local, state, national, and global levels.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Significant administrative and leadership experience.
- National/international leader in health professions with excellent communication skills.
- Ability to craft and execute a strategic plan.
- Commitment to excellence in research, teaching, clinical practice, and service.
- Experience in faculty recruitment and development.
- Ability to grow research programs and recruit faculty.
- Record of developing innovative programs.
- Success in fundraising and building partnerships.
- Ability to lead a strong team in a dynamic environment.
Educational Requirements/Experience:
- M.D., Ph.D., or Ed.D.
- Experience in health professions education, faculty development, student admission, curriculum planning, fiscal management, and scholarly productivity.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive responsibility in higher education.
- Eligible for appointment at Professor level; prior experience as Chair or Associate/Vice Dean preferred.
