General Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Health Promotion/Education, Education or related field. Master's preferred. Two years of experience in advising peer groups, health-related practice, health programming or related field. Current working knowledge of health trends, issues, and topics that directly affect the college aged population. Experience in developing and delivering educational programming on a variety of health-related issues. Demonstrated knowledge of health promotion, behavior change and public health theory and models. Excellent interpersonal skills and proficient public speaker. Experience in supervising and evaluating others work. NASPA CPE trainer certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Additional education can be considered in lieu of experience.
Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:
Performs highly advanced specialist duties for the Student Wellness department and provides oversight of the Peer Health Ambassador program focusing on peer-to-peer education and evidence-based practices to build a culture of health and wellness that foster student well-being. Works collaboratively with Student Wellness staff and campus partners to provide educational programming on campus.
Primary Responsibilities (Staff Positions Only):
- Serves as advisor to the Peer Health Ambassador (PHA) program through the Student Wellness department. Provides training to all PHAs at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester. Educates PHAs on relevant health topics for college students, including but not limited to, substance use, sexual health, healthy relationships, mental health and stress management, and general wellness.
- Creates training and activities for weekly meetings with PHAs to aid in team building and ongoing peer educator professional development. Maintains and updates peer education course in Blackboard.
- Oversees the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs created by PHAs. Builds and maintains PHA schedules including office hours, scheduled presentations, workshops, events, and other assignments.
- Provides direct support and oversight of PHA events (may include nights and weekends). Manages PHA recruitment and selects the upcoming academic year cohort each Spring semester in collaboration with the Director.
- Evaluates PHAs each semester for effectiveness in their roles as peer educators to foster personal and professional growth. Participates in professional development specific to training and developing student leaders and peer educators for effective health education programming.
- Develops relationships with campus partners to support growth of the PHA program. Prepares required reports to support data collection within the department.
- Supports various Student Wellness departmental initiatives, including but not limited to, engagement with New Student Orientation, Bearkat Kickoff, Welcome Week, annual health fairs, etc. Presents on various health and wellness topics including alcohol and other drugs, mental health and stress management, sexual health and healthy relationships, and overall well-being related topics to the SHSU student community.
