Specialty Supervisor in Surgery

About This Opportunity

As a Specialty Supervisor in Surgery, you will play a central role in delivering high-quality clinical education within the Clinical Unit. Working closely with the Principal Specialty Supervisor, you will support the integration of learning across all four years of the medical program and build strong connections with hospital and community care clinicians.

Highly visible in the clinical environment, you will bring recognised expertise and a proven academic track record in surgery, inspiring students through teaching, supervision, and mentorship. This role offers the opportunity to shape the next generation of surgeons while strengthening the links between UQ, healthcare providers, and the wider community.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching & Learning – Provide specialty-specific leadership in delivering high-quality clinical education, supervision, assessment, and feedback across all years of the program, while supporting colleagues and contributing to curriculum improvement.
  • Research (where applicable) – Maintain an active research profile with quality outputs, funding applications, and engagement with best-practice methodologies, including the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Supervision & Development (where applicable) – Lead and mentor staff and trainees through effective supervision, feedback, and professional development, while modelling responsible professional and research conduct.
  • Citizenship & Service – Contribute to a respectful, inclusive, and culturally safe environment, support student engagement and career development, pursue continuing professional development, and actively participate in School, Faculty, and University initiatives and governance.

Organisational Relationships

This position reports to the Head, Ipswich Clinical Unit with functional oversight from the Head, Mayne Academy of Surgery.

About You

  • Medical qualification with eligibility for registration in Australia and recognised specialist accreditation (AHPRA).
  • PhD or equivalent, or an appropriate combination of professional and academic achievements in the discipline.
  • Established profile in clinical teaching and/or research, with substantial senior contributions to education at undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional-entry levels.
  • Expert discipline knowledge and extensive clinical experience, including evidence of innovation and adoption of new techniques.
  • Strong research record, including national publications, conference presentations, and success in securing and managing external funding, with a developing international profile.
  • Experience in curriculum development, supervision of HDR students and/or specialty trainees, and meaningful service or leadership roles that strengthen links within the profession and specialty.

This position is a fixed term appointment with the University, working in collaboration with the Ipswich Hospital for the duration of the appointment. A Conjoint/Secondment arrangement with Queensland Health may be considered for a suitable applicant. A Conjoint/Secondment offer made to the suitable candidate will be a fixed-term appointment.

This position may attract additional salary loadings (clinical and/or state) within this role, based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and registrations and subject to approval. More information can be found here

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including right to work in Australia, education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations.
