Position Summary

Sprinkler Fitter is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of fire sprinkler systems throughout campus facilities. This role oversees and expands the university’s fire sprinkler inspection, testing, and maintenance program, utilizing both internal staff and external contractors. The position also supports system outages required for construction, maintenance, or other operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fire Sprinkler Maintenance – Perform, oversee, and troubleshoot the repair and replacement of fire sprinkler piping, valves, and system components to maintain compliance and ensure optimal performance.
  • Inspection and Testing Program Management - Manage and coordinate the university’s fire sprinkler system inspection, testing, and repair programs. Develop strategies to expand internal capabilities to reduce reliance on outside contractors.
  • System Outage Coordination – Plan, schedule, and communicate fire sprinkler system outages, including system draining and refilling to support construction, maintenance and renovation projects.
  • Internal Inspections - Conduct internal inspections of fire sprinkler systems to ensure all components function properly and meet required standards.
  • Program Evaluation - Evaluate the existing fire sprinkler inspection, testing, and maintenance program for efficiency, cost reduction and continuous improvement.
  • Capital Project Support - Provide technical guidance to leadership on capital repair and improvement projects related to fire sprinkler and suppression systems.

Shift

7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in electronics or closely related field or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities can be acquired is required.
  • Two years of experience in fire detection and signaling systems to include installation, inspection, testing, commissioning, repair and maintenance including knowledge and application of NFPA, local and state fire safety standards and regulations.
  • A valid motor vehicle driver’s license is required.
  • A manufacturer’s training certificate for the inspection, testing and maintenance of the manufacturer’s fire alarm system OR possession of a certificate for the inspection, testing and maintenance from a nationally recognized certificate program, such as National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Level II, OR the ability to obtain NICET Level II certification within six months is required.
  • Ability on a daily basis to:
    • Grasp, lift, carry and set down objects of moderate weight (15-25 pounds)
    • Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and stairs

Preferred Qualifications

Five years of journeyman level sprinkler fitting experience with preference given to Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance.
A valid motor vehicle driver’s license is required.
NICET Certification in Inspection & Testing of Water Based Fire Protection is preferred.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $26.00 - $30.00 per hour
Grade: GGS-F
University Title: Fire Equipment Technician III
