Job Description:
The Senior HR Data Insights Associate sits at the center of data and analytics for HR and Equal Opportunity/Title IX at Syracuse University, supporting a wide range of initiatives with rigorous data collection, analysis and reporting. This role supports both day-to-day operations and long-term initiatives while working collaboratively with functional experts to understand needs, develop and interpret analytics, create reports and dashboards, and present results to HR and University leaders. Beyond core reporting, this role brings a strong focus on process improvement and automation, identifying opportunities and potential for AI-assistance to streamline data workflows and reduce manual effort. The Senior HR Data Insights Associate also acts as a key data subject matter expert for the HR Centers of Excellence, shaping their initiatives through sound data design and building capability across HR by training users to workindependently within their own tools.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in data analytics, information systems, statistics, mathematics, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 5 years in an HR or data-intensive role with progressively responsible experience working with institutional data, data modeling, data warehouse environments, and reporting systems within a complex organization. Higher education experience preferred.
- Experience using data platforms (SQL, Tableau, Power BI) and ERP or HCM software to create compelling reports and dashboard which support data insights and decisions, preferably in the context of Human Resources, people operations or workforce management.
- Proven success analyzing processes and workflows to identify data automation and process improvement opportunities and potential for AI-assistance and machine learning.
- Exposure to statistical modeling, forecasting, or scenario analysis to support workforce planning decisions
Skills and Knowledge:
- Demonstrated proficiency with SQL, Tableau, or Microsoft Power BI. Working knowledge of Microsoft Access reporting and integration of data within existing data models a plus.
- Experience with coding languages such as R and Python to support analysis and integration of challenging datasets.
- Advanced expertise in Microsoft Excel
- Proficiency with working with complex data structures and integration of systems.
- Ability to translate technical outputs into actionable insights for HR and university leadership.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving abilities with attention to accuracy and detail.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Commitment to confidentiality, equity, and inclusion principles.
Responsibilities:
Data Reporting, Analytics and Engagement:
- Create dashboards and ad hoc reports using Tableau and other tools to support HR, University initiatives, and compliance priorities.
- Combine data from multiple sources, validate accuracy, and develop clear, visual reporting to track key metrics.
- Maintain active and ongoing communication with HR leadership and stakeholders through training sessions and quarterly reviews to proactively highlight significant trends or anomalies to initiate dialogue and support decision-making.
Process Improvement, Innovation & Project Support:
- Collaborate with HR and compliance staff to analyze and improve HR business processes.
- Research and recommend innovative solutions and tools to meet business needs and enhance user experience with a focus on AI and accessibility.
- Ensure that system functionality aligns with evolving business data needs and federal and state compliance requirements.
HR Center of Excellence Data Partnership:
- Serve as the subject matter expert supporting HR Centers of Excellence on data-related needs.
- Guide COE initiatives from a data design and architecture perspective, ensuring solutions are structurally sound and scalable.
- Train and support COE staff on relevant tools and platforms so they can independently maintain, modify, and extend reports and dashboards.
Modeling & Analysis:
- Create predictive models and conduct 'what-if' scenario analysis to support decisions in areas such as labor, benefits, and compensation. Assist in evaluating program effectiveness across employee populations.
Professional Growth & Team Support:
- Progressively expand knowledge of broader HR systems, strategy, and decision-making by participating in cross-functional initiatives and training opportunities to build familiarity with key priorities, workflows, and institutional context.
- Provide training and backup support on systems and data matters as needed.
