Job Description

Reporting to the Upward Bound Math and Science Director, the Education Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, assessing, and supervising academic components of the Upward Bound Math & Science Programs. Responsibilities will include program liaison between the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program, the target school staff and community education programs. This includes overseeing academic programming for academic year workshops and the residential segment of the six-week summer academy. The Educational Coordinator also holds oversight responsibility for UBMS Residential Counselors and all academic support programs, including supervision of the Summer Instructor and Project-Based Learning facilitator.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as liaison between the UBMS program and area target schools (Fitchburg and Leominster High Schools) staff.
  2. Coordinate school, university staff and volunteer tutors for participants.
  3. Plan and implement academic success workshops and other related educational activities.
  4. Advocate for students in college preparation, searches, applications and the financial aid process.
  5. Conduct advisement and counseling activities.
  6. Assist in program formative and summative evaluations 4 times a year.
  7. Keep and maintain appropriate program and student records.
  8. Identify, screen, and select eligible disadvantaged participants in need of academic support in order to successfully pursue a post-secondary program.
  9. Diagnose academic needs of each program participant and develop a college education plan (CEP) for each participant.
  10. Supervise the administration of standardized academic assessments to program participants.
  11. Monitor the 62 program participants' academic progress throughout the year.
  12. Meet with participants a minimum 4 times a year to assess their progress. Revise participants' College Education Plans as goals are met or are altered.
  13. Recruit, hire, train and supervise program tutors and assistants.
  14. Plan, implement and supervise the school year program (25 Weekly Academic Sessions and additional educational activities.)
  15. Facilitate academic year instructor/tutor meetings with participants and their parent/guardians.
  16. Schedule participants in appropriate courses for the six week residential summer session (working with the target schools guidance counselors.)
  17. Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the summer academic program including: tutor/instructor/student orientation, tutor sessions and weekly staff meetings.
  18. Work with parent/guardians in meeting their child's goals for post-secondary programming.
  19. Ensures compliance with university and federal regulations.
  20. Attend professional development and required training as assigned by Director of Upward Bound Math and Science.
  21. Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Upward Bound Math and Science.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor's degree in mathematics science, education, or related field completed by January 1, 2026.
  2. Minimum of one to three years experience in education, counseling or a related program.
  3. Excellent communication/organizational skills, bilingual ability preferred, program development, and strong interpersonal skills are helpful.
  4. Experience with disadvantaged populations or similar programs (i.e. TRIO).
  5. Knowledge of the college admissions process; financial aid opportunities and high school graduation requirements.
  6. Ability to exercise good judgment.
  7. Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks and adhere to guidelines.
  8. Flexibility for extended summer hours, nights, and weekends.
  9. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required for advising students in Fitchburg and Leominster.
  10. Personal experience in overcoming barriers akin to those faced by project participants is beneficial.
  11. Independent and flexible work approach.
  12. Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check); a background check satisfactory to the university.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bilingual ability, program development, and experience with disadvantaged populations or similar programs (e.g., TRIO) are beneficial.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The annual salary range for this position is $50,000 to $53,000 commensurate with education and experience. Occasional night and weekends hours as needed. Additionally hours will vary during the six week summer program to meet the needs of the summer schedule which includes night and weekend hours as needed. This position is contingent on continued grant funding.
