GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Staff Counselor is responsible for providing counseling for individuals, couples, and groups, assessments and evaluations, crisis intervention and management, and supervision of trainees. Will assist with various programmatic activities of the Counseling Services Office in the area of prevention (e.g., alcohol, sexual assault, violence) on campus as needed.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide personal counseling to individuals, couples, and/or groups of Fitchburg State University students.
- Provide psychological assessment and evaluation of Fitchburg State University students.
- Provide consultation to members of the University community regarding issues and concerns related to student mental health.
- Provide for crisis intervention and management during and after working hours.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of clinical documentation in accordance with organizational standards and regulatory requirements.
- Actively participates in and contributes to the smooth functioning of the department, collaborating with other offices, services, and educational units.
- Participate in activities related to violence prevention (e.g., sexual assault prevention, domestic violence prevention).
- Assist in maintaining a database of mental health and wellness related social media content for use in promotional initiatives.
- May serve on college committees, as well as ad-hoc committees in the Division of Student Affairs.
- Maintain open and positive lines of communication with all other administrative and faculty offices.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Counseling Services.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- An earned Master’s Degree from an accredited program in Mental Health Counseling, an earned Masters of Social Work Degree, or an earned doctorate (e.g., Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) in a mental-health related field.
- Licensure, or licensure eligibility in a mental health-related field (e.g., LMHC, LICSW, Clinical Psychologist).
- Experience commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of the position, preferably with a college population.
- Demonstrated success in the design, delivery, and evaluation of psychoeducational and prevention-oriented programs in a collegiate setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of student populations served by Fitchburg State University.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant college mental health issues such as substance abuse, violence, trauma, eating disorders, and neurodivergence.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in working with survivors of sexual assault and other trauma.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with members of the college community, outside agencies, and the general public.
- Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check); a background check satisfactory to the university.
