General Statement of Duties: The Staff Associate, EH&S and Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for assisting in campus compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations related to environmental health and safety as well as campus-wide programming related to sustainability efforts. The incumbent engages with the university community to develop programs that satisfy regulatory compliance. They assist with hazardous waste management, perform audits and inspections, and educate the university through the creation of manuals as well as organized training, workshops, and seminars.

Responsibilities:

  1. (E) Assist the Director in ensuring compliance with all regulations and existing University programs through inspections, audits, investigations, hazard assessments, response actions, and training.
  2. (E) Assist in the development and implementation of EH&S policies, procedures, and programs.
  3. (E) Assist in the development and implementation of campus wide programs relating to sustainable efforts including all state mandated Executive Orders, federal programs, the American College and University President's Climate Commitment, and other associations that the University may be affiliated with. Develop cost estimates for programs. Prepare reports and summaries as directed.
  4. (E) Encourage, develop and facilitate sustainability programs initiated by student, faculty, and staff community members. Foster and coordinate new ideas and concepts for sustainability programming, identify materials and resources necessary to supplement or expand existing programs.
  5. (E) Organize training seminars, workshops, and conferences as required in response to other evolving needs and opportunities.
  6. (E) Work with consultants, contractors, and Facilities staff to collect data on energy use, Greenhouse Gas Emissions, and other sustainability performance indicators for the campus. This would include such things as the compilation of performance data on specific buildings and presenting it in the prescribed format for dissemination to University Management. Such things include, but are not limited to, Mass Rideshare Program, USGBC LEED certification, SightLines Go-Green initiative, Mass Lead By Example Report., Princeton Review Green Campuses.
  7. (E) Assist the Director in defining goals, performance metrics and a long- range plan for EH&S compliance and sustainability at Worcester State University. Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, document performance trends, and recommend and implement modifications to improve program effectiveness. Serve on the University Sustainability Committee and other committees, as appropriate.
  8. (E) Maintains and monitors the sustainability webpage and implements other social media campaigns to effectively communicate sustainability efforts.
  9. (E) Assist the Director with all facets of regulatory compliance involving hazardous waste including collection, labeling, inspections, record management, and reporting submittals.
  10. (E) Develop and maintain knowledge on all applicable state and federal compliance requirements that are applicable to the University. Assist in preparing and implementing any programs and documents needed to insure environmental and safety compliance.
  11. (E) Assists in developing manuals and recommends policies and procedures for the safe use of chemical substances, hazardous waste management, Right-to-Know Law implementation, and general campus safety in compliance with State and Federal Regulations and Worcester State University's Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  12. (E) Perform various audits and inspections, document results, and communicate deficiencies to the Director in accordance with site specific regulatory plans or programs.
  13. (E) Work with EH&S Director to identify staffing needs, secure resources and effectively supervise subordinate staff.
  14. (E) Responsible for responding to campus emergencies as required.
  15. (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
  16. (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.
  17. (E) Responsible for contributing to Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action objectives.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in occupational health, environmental science, or related field.
  • Experience related to the practical application of policy, scientific, and engineering practices and principles pertaining to environmental sustainability.
  • Familiarity with, and the ability to read and interpret local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to encourage, facilitate, and develop consensus among a diverse constituency.
  • Effective human relations and facilitation skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to effectively plan and coordinate multi-task requirements and meet self and imposed objectives and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment subject to changing priorities.
  • Highly proficient in the use of personal computers in a Windows environment.
  • Valid Drivers License.
  • Ability to move chemical and biological waste containers, including up to 50lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or significant progress towards a degree in occupational health, environmental science, or related field or significant related training and work experience.
  • OSHA 40 HAZWOPER

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The firm annual salary range for this position is $70,000- $75,000, commensurate with relevant professional experience and education.
