8:30am - 5:00pm (academic year)
8:00am - 4:30pm (summer)

Job Description:

The Hazardous Waste Assistant position is a non-exempt position that reports directly to the Hazardous Waste Operations Manager and supports Hazardous Waste Management Program functions. This position provides hazardous and regulated waste management services and guidance and assists in facilitating University adherence to state and federal hazardous and regulated waste laws, requirements, standards and best practices. This position assists with management and disposal of regulated and hazardous wastes generated in academic, facility maintenance, and construction areas at the University.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, or an applicable environmental related science, with a minimum of two years of college-level chemistry preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-2 years of experience with hazardous waste or labpack operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with lab pack and waste manifesting operations preferred.
  • Successful candidate is expected to establish their principal residence in the Central New York area within approximately 30 minutes driving distance from Syracuse University.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of chemical and /or hazardous waste and related regulations.
  • Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office application suite and applicable applications.
  • Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse campus population.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a highly matrixed, decentralized and complex work environment.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in support of all areas of the EHSS Department.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Strong data management skills.
  • Valid NYS Drivers license and a driving record which meets University requirements is required.
  • Must be medically fit and able to wear respiratory protection.
  • HAZWOPER 40 or 24 Hour certification preferred.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs., and able to maneuver 55-gallon drums weighing up to 800 lbs. through the use of a drum cart.

Responsibilities:

  • Retrieves hazardous and regulated (oils, PCBs, medical, etc.) waste from University waste generator locations and safely transports the waste to one of the Universitys central waste accumulation areas.
  • Uses independent judgment and knowledge of chemical characteristics, hazards and compatibilities to identify, characterize, label, segregate, and containerize collected wastes.
  • Uses knowledge and understanding of state, federal and local regulated waste laws, regulations, and best practices to provides compliance and safety assistance and guidance to waste generators.
  • Frequently visits waste generation location to engage with waste generators and to educate and support them in managing their waste safely and compliantly.
  • Support and services waste generators to assist and enhance related safety and compliance. Also develops trainings, performs hazardous waste related assessments, and prepares guidance documents and other informational materials for waste generators.
  • Assists with managing hazardous and regulated wastes stored in the Universitys central waste accumulation areas including waste bulking, acid/base neutralization, and other waste management operations.
  • Helps to prepare and package collected chemical, medical and other regulated wastes for shipment for off-site disposal following strict laws, rules and regulations.
  • Supports in maintaining detailed record and waste disposal data as required by regulation and best management practices keeping.
  • Performs waste sampling as needed to assist with waste characterization.
  • Assists with preparing compliance and incident reports, and developing and maintaining written waste management program information, plans, documents and webpages.
  • Performs data entry and records management functions.
  • Participates in chemical, biological or environmental incident investigations and spill response actions including the continued ability to use chemical protective suits, respirators, specialized equipment and air monitoring devices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
