Job Summary
Under general supervision, maintains boilers and furnaces in a boiler plant. Has charge of the operations and maintenance of a boiler plant facility in which the largest boiler is rated not more than 100 pounds of steam pressure or more than 340°F hot water, and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment.
Job Duties
- Inspects equipment to detect routine malfunctions, need for repair, adjustment, and lubrication.
- Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices to verify operating conditions.
- Records data such as temperature, hours of operation, fuel consumption, temperature or pressure, water levels, voltage load, and generator balance. Records operation and maintenance actions taken during the shift in the operator’s logbook.
- Performs water tests and adds chemicals, such as water softeners
- Manipulates manual controls and overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended ranges. Determines when to switch to backup equipment or shut down equipment.
- Performs first echelon cleaning, repair, and maintenance of furnaces and boilers
- Operates and maintains tools and equipment of the trade. Cleans work area upon completion of assignment.
- Operates central station type reciprocating centrifugal or absorption air conditioning and refrigeration equipment with single compressor and chiller units in excess of 500 tons each
- May provide guidance and instruction to lower-level stationary engineers and assigned personnel.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience: Five years in the operation of a boiler room facility
Other:
Licensure as a First Grade Stationary Engineer in the State of Maryland, a Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license may be required
Other Preferences for Consideration
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis, with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of and skill in the operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers, furnaces, equipment, and fuels. Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety practices related to the boiler room facility, of the principles of electricity, hydraulics, and mechanics. Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade. Ability to fire boilers; to read gauges and judge operating efficiency and safe conditions of boilers; to adjust burner controls to achieve maximum efficiency; to perform cleaning and major repairs to boilers and their auxiliaries; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and scaffolding; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather and temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment; to communicate effectively; to provide guidance and instruction to lower level stationary engineers and assigned personnel.
