GENERAL DUTIES

Under general supervision, is responsible for the operation, maintenance, adjustments, testing and repair of steam power plant, air conditioning, chiller plant, fire protection systems, electro-mechanical building equipment and related auxiliary systems in public buildings; performs related work.

  • Operates, maintains repairs and adjusts manuals and automatic gas and oil fired boilers, furnaces, steam reducing stations, engines, turbines , pumps, valves, heat exchangers, generators, motors, water treatment systems, cooling towers, condensers, evaporators, emergency generators and associated equipment for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and lighting in public buildings.
  • Performs periodic inspections of equipment and repairs of such equipment.
  • Schedules, performs and may oversee preventive maintenance.
  • Directs the work of oilers, high-pressure plant tenders and other subordinate personnel assigned to HVAC plant operations.
  • Takes responsible charge of a watch and while so engaged, supervises and directs subordinates personnel; addresses emergency repairs as required.
  • Operates control consoles in control rooms for building maintenance and building automation systems.
  • Adjusts HVAC systems water chemistry through testing, treatment, retesting and recording of readings.
  • Prepares requisitions for materials and spare parts in accordance with College procedures.
  • Orients, trains and monitors subordinates and other personnel on plant operations and job related safety.
  • Reads meters, gauges and other recording devices keeping logs of same.
  • Prepares and maintains records and makes reports of both a technical and informational nature regarding HVAC maintenance and repair.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Founded in 1847, The City College of New York is the oldest institution within the City University of New York. The College operates across 13 buildings on a 36-acre campus and supports a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

The Facilities department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of campus mechanical, heating, cooling, and energy systems that support academic, administrative, and residential operations. Facilities also oversees building infrastructure and related systems in accordance with CUNY policies and applicable safety and regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the Senior Stationary Engineer, the Stationary Engineer duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible charge of watch in High-Pressure Boiler Plants. Must possess the experience and ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot boiler plant issues.
  • Responsible for replacing the centrifugal pump mechanical seals and complete pump alignment.
  • Replace cooling tower motor drive flexible couplings and complete alignment.
  • Takes responsible charge of watch in 12,000-ton Chiller Plant. Must possess the experience and ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot chiller plant issues.

The successful candidate must possess the following:

  • The physical stamina to complete rounds of all mechanical spaces of our 13 buildings across 36 acres;
  • A valid Citywide Standpipe Certificate (S-13) issued by the FDNY;
  • A valid Citywide Automatic Sprinkler Certificate (S-12) issued by the FDNY;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A valid License for High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.
  2. A valid certificate of qualification for Refrigerating Machine Operator (unlimited Capacity) issued by the New York City Fire Department and a Universal CFC Certificate issued by EPA for Handling Refrigerants.

For appointment in certain Colleges, candidates will also be required to possess one or more of the following:

  • A valid Citywide Standpipe Certificate issued by the New York Fire Department (S13)
  • A valid Citywide Automatic Sprinkler Certificate issued by the New York City Fire Department (S12)
  • A valid Interior Fire Alarm Certificate issued by the New York City Fire Department
  • A valid Pool Operator’s certificate issued by a Qualified Swimming Pool Water Treatment Operator Provider

Notes:

  • Some of the physical activities performed by Stationary Engineers and environmental conditions experience are working in confined areas in a physical plant, including boiler room, heating and ventilating room, walking up and down stairs, climbing up and down ladders, handling chemicals, and being around hazardous materials such as asbestos and infectious waste.
  • All licenses and certifications must be maintained for the duration of employment.
